The email issued mentioned earlier this week is now fixed! You may also have received previous emails that were meant to be sent over the last few days - apologies, this was a one time issue and shouldn't happen again!

A HUGE thanks for all the great CZ DIY write ups!

California , Wheeeeee!
Thanks to JBell,Justin,BM11,Charger,BenY and everyone else who's taken the time to share tips and tricks for me to use.

Taking the advice of many, many enternet folk, I've resisted the urge to spend any money on the 455 and buy a Anschutz instead.
Now that the 64 MPR is finally on the way, I thought it was a good time to try getting the most out of the stock cz455pt parts. At home, on the cheap.

I pillar bedded it with some lamp rod and JB weld, deburred and polished the bolt handle/firing pin, changed the trigger spring and finally threaded the bolt handle for the knob that had been sitting for months.

It's far from perfect work, but it all made a BIG difference and it's good enough for the gal I run with.

1st tests fiddling with torque settings.

wind -2, bipod and rear bag
My friends shot the groups on the right, I was shivering from cold pretty good on the last group.

I tried the 6 group challenge the next day, pretty crappy as usual, but seems the groups excluding my obligatory "flyers" were tighter than before bedding.

Attempt #2
I was pretty happy with groups 1-4, then my friend showed up to show off his revamped 77/22 and we bs'd for a while. I got the shivers again as the sun went down behind the mountain for the night. I brought an extra coat this time, but my feet n legs were pretty damn cold
Shanked shot 5 of group 5 and #6 went all to shit
54zs.jpg

With the shanked groups, this still comes right around my best previous AVG and certainly beats my best group, but this printer paper is no good for measuring targets.
I'll just have to get some proper target backer and try it again:D

Thanks again and Happy Holidays to all!

I got antsy waiting for the bedding to cure and got to threading the bolt on the China Lathe(Me+DeWalt benchtop grinder+1/4x*28? tap)

Re read some old threads I had found and got to work. None recommended using a bench grinder for final profile......
If my reading comprehension wasn't total crap and I actually used a measuring device of some sort, it might have come out perfect;)
I got lucky and the hollow spot in the stock knob did not require filling.

Just don't look here:eek:
pnp1.jpg

An when that was done, the bedding was just ready to be popped apart. I ended up using some case sizing wax for release agent, which worked like a champ.
I was pretty nervous that I glued my gun together as this was my first go at bedding.

It could use a little more clean up, but nobody has to see any of it;)

The cocking ramp surfaces had some seriously bad burrs and it was apparent where things needed a little tlc to fit better. A VERY gentle filing and polish has got it feeling pretty proper and smooth.

I've got a consistently inconsistent trigger break at 1.8-2lbs with a spring I scrounged up in the parts bin.

None of the work is perfect, but I had a great time doing it and it's all around a lot more functional and fun to shoot.

Kinda makes me want to strip the action down to the cerakote and blast a new camo scheme..............

How did you thread for your bolt handle?

Not very carefully.....HA!;)

posted above

Note the buggered up threads mid way were the hollow spot in the stock knoblet. Sometimes this hole will run deep into where the threads will be and I read need to be filled with silver solder before threading.

If I could retain what I read better, I would have profiled a shoulder from the stock knoblet for the new knob to butt on and also had a longer lever. These would be important for those hung up on cosmetics or planning on shooting with gloves on.

And when you get tired of those oddball flyers, left and right of poa,
that's when you'll start thinking about bedding the barrel just forward of the receiver.
The over/under flyers can be blamed on hot rounds or squibs, but left/right is due to
either you, or a change in alignment of the barrel/receiver due to recoil/harmonics.
Then again, that goes against the free floated theory of rimfire accuracy.

Free floated? Ptttttttthpt! Bed that barrel! Worked for me.

I'm pretty sure most of the "flyers" are my fault.
It's usually inconsistent tension on my hold or not setting up proper. I got plenty to learn yet.

I've been planning to try out a barrel shim today. The brother in law is supposed to bring by the 77/22 for a little Xmas fun.

Thanks for all the great info. I may be catching the sickness you have.......what is the remedy?:D

Jbell- I thought the ramp profiling was a little above my pay grade, but your posts for Bob's CZ inspired me to check out the ramp surfaces.
The firing pin was pretty badly galled and the ramps on the bolt handle were pretty uneven. I was surprised how quickly it tuned up with a very gentle filing and polish.
Everything is buttery smooth now thanks to you!

Now I've got to go tune up a green bean casserole so I can have some time to shoot and test where I may want to bed the barrel!

Merry Xmas

Nice job, komishe! From here, it seems pretty justifiable to buy a Lilja barrel, but I have never been the voice of financial reason...

FWIW, my CZ shoots pretty well with a floated barrel. I've tried the stack of business cards trick to experiment with a variable location pressure pad, but never saw better results. I should test again when it gets warm, all of my testing was done last summer.

I am glad you got the gun shooting this well! Looks good! May I ask what the torque settings on the actions screws are? I just got finished shooting mine and am pretty disgusted with myself right now. I had to just step back and stop shooting for a bit and hit the drawing board again. I think the torque settings may be part of my problem..

I'd like to see the CZ compared to the Annie!

Pillar bed the stock and be gone from having to mess with action torque settings!

So glad I could help out with the bolt, that was the only reason for me making that post in the first place. I just wanted to show that if I can do it then anyone can. It really is worth the little time it takes.

As far as the action screw torque, I agree it becomes a LOT less important with a proper stress free bedding. However on the 455 the barrel forcing screws require a pretty specific torque. That is something to look at when tuning one of these rifles...

What do you torque the barrel screws to? I have read 32 and 44.

The stock is pillar bedded both screws and seems to be stress free.

I honestly don't remember. I think it is in that thread somewhere. Or you could PM BM11 and ask him it is his rifle and he has a memory like a steel trap, mine is more like a screen door...

Thanks for all the great info. I may be catching the sickness you have.......what is the remedy?

Good news is, it's not a sickness, it's a fascination. Bad news is, the fascination is expensive,
but then, so is accuracy. However, if you remember that the definition of "Art" is the refined use
of a survival skill in a non-survival environment, then you can blame the expense on your dedication
to your ongoing artistic endeavors. Works for me...

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been on the road and am currently stuck in the *fabulous* shithole called Las Vegas.

Torque was set at only 20 inch lbs BUT I have yet to further experiment with that.
I figured the groups from the day before were good enough for me to do the 6x5 challenge.

Testing on Xmas was a flop. It was just about freezing down at my range where the sun don't shine.....worst sets of groups I've shot in a looooooong time:mad:
Very interested to see what the more experienced have to say on Jbell's new post about the effects of cold on accuracy.

Sometimes it's nice to get back on the far less finicky centerfires to get relief from this mad scientist crap;)

Bob's post on barrel info if you didn't find it yet

Justin- I like the way you think.

Yes I have seen that link, it is where I learned ALOT about these rifles!
