Keep in mind I'm not a fisherman by any means. My son and I drop in now and then to fish local waterways for fun and just to be outside but that's it. A friend called and invited us to go sturgeon fishing yesterday and had a blast. Couldn't keep anything for whatever reason, rules are rules, but we caught 6, 3 of which would have been keepers, and one oversize.

Had a damn fun time for my first time out sturgeon fishing.

My son reeling in the biggest of the day.

My son with his big catch. He is holding up six fingers since that was our 6th fish of the day. That is not me holding the fish, that is my buddy who was so kind as to invite us.

Was a damn nice day out there.

Cool! Surgeon fishing is illegal up here, they are an endangered species in these parts. If you accidentally get one on your line, you are supposed to cut your line.

I had a feeling when I clicked on this post it was going to be a fellow PNW'er. Nice catch, and it's always a nice day when liquid sunshine stays away.

That's awesome. Cigar is the icing, just bought a box today...

I rarely get the chance to enjoy them but have quite a few nice ones always ready. I generally never smoke them in front of my kid. He knows I have them, knows what they are, knows they are for adults only, and not a concern really, just never did until that day. Couldn't help it, was so nice out so sat at the back of the boat a bit and enjoyed it while the wind was pushing smoke away. I did offer him one first and he told me that he wasn't old enough. Said that he had to be 18 to use tobacco and drink beer. Eh, close enough.

Haha, smart kid, sounds like a smart papa too. Happy Hunting (well, sorta :D)

WHats the biggest size you have caught before ? I see them on tv shows and they look like they get huge!

My Dad's a commercial fisherman, and there's some monsters out there. Like 8 feet, two big men can't get them in the boat - big. When I was a little kid, seeing those monsters coming up from the deep were pretty impressive. And the ugly bastard green sturgeon, bigass spines on their back that can do some serious damage.

White sturgeon ARE delicious though.

I've never been before last weekend. The one in the picture with my son was over the 54" limit. My buddy in the picture told of some large ones he has brought to the surface in the same area.

They for sure are a crazy looking fish. It would blow me away every time we'd see it come up finally and it was just this large white dinosaur looking creature. The one I brought in that was jumping out of the water was crazy looking too. Just a large fish to see jumping like that and running away with line. Gives an appreciation for how strong they are. I took a video of one being released and even the way it swims away looks like something out of a dinosaur movie.
