Sunday I finally got a chance to shoot a local match I'd been meaning to go to for a while. For once I did not have a conflict and got a chance to shoot the 'Safari Silhouette Fun Match' at a local club. I've been shooting a 3/8 (bigger targets than NRA Sil. but still hard enough
) fun match which has got me hooked.
The Safari Fun Match is a 50rd COF consisting of 40, 50, 75, and 100M lines with a second 40M line off to one side. Instead of one particular animal at each distance the five animals that make up the string are different. They use regulation size NRA silhouettes and mix in a couple other sizes too. Each line started/ended with a regulation size chicken. Those suckers are small at 40M but they're down right tiny at 75! That's where this match get's interesting. Instead of shooting off hand, competitors can shoot prone, seated, off a bench, bag, bipod, whatever. There is also no limit on the rifle as far as weight.
Targets listed L.-R. for first bank of 5. The second bank was reversed, ie. the rams at 40 were butt to butt.
At 40M (left) you had a regulation chicken, scaled down turkey, scaled down pig, reg. turkey, and a scaled down ram.
At 50, IIRC, were a reg. chicken, scaled down ram, reg. pig, scaled down turkey, scaled down ram.
At 75, reg. chicken, scaled down turkey, bowling pin plate, reg. turkey, scaled down pig.
At 40M (right) I can't remember the exact order. First match and all it was a little confusing. I had to watch the guys that had shot it before so I knew the order to set targets.
After being told about this match it sounded like an outstanding opportunity to play with my CMP 40X. I got there early to help setup and take full advantage of the practice period leading up to the match. The weather was awful, raining sideways with wind blowing extremely hard left to right. The match director decided to not set up the 100M line. With the weather we held off on setup and finally got started about forty-five minutes late.
My assumptions about using the 40X were correct it was a laser. At 40/50M it was dead on w/my 25yd zero from my last range outing. I didn't get to work out my zeros for 75M before they called practice b/c someone else had already knocked them all down. Since we started late we only got one practice session and then had to get started. I hit 10 for 10 at 40M then the second shooter shot his first string and the weather picked up again. The Match Director took a vote and decided to call it a day
. Of course, once we got everything put up the weather broke but it was still a blast and I'm really looking forward to next month. This weekend they've got a 'fun' pistol match Sun. I'm thinking I might have to give it a shot...
