Range Report A way to achieve sub MOA?

Hello everyone,
very new to the forum so if I am posting in the wrong area I apologize. Anyways, I was talking to a guy in a local gun shop that told me that with a brand new barrel to shoot one round, clean the barrel and repeat for a total of 40 times. He said something about the procedure making the bullet cut perfect grooves in the rifling, causing extremely accurate shots, I believe he said something along the lines of 3 shots in the size of a dime at 500 yard? I am just curious if anyone has ever heard of this at all. Thank you!

Sounds like what you were hearing was a process in which to break in a new barrel.

Shooting a dime size 3-shot group at 500yrds because of the above procedure - that's something dreams are made of.

The amount of gun shop commandos is staggering. Dont get me wrong, there are a few good, knowledgeable shooter out there who moonlight behind a counter, but the majority of the so-called "experts" out there are misinformed internet chuckleheads who only want to sell you the most expensive piece of garbage they can and dont care if it actually fits your needs or not. Breaking in a barrel, how its done and why, varies by quality and construction. Some barrels need it more than others, some need a more thorough process than others. There are MMULTIPLE threads on this forum and others dedicated to the best process for each. Its like cleaning. To each his own. Ask 20 top shooters/smiths how to do it, and youll get 20 different answers.

Above all, do your own research, be a healthy skeptic, and keep your own counsel.

Most people would be happy with 3 shots in the size of a dime at 100 yards.

I can guarantee you that there are plenty of barrels that will shoot sub 1" at 100 yards that never got cleaned once for the first 40 rounds. I have two. And I only have two rifles. Seems to me that most modern rifles will with good technique and ammo.

This statement right here should have made you wonder. When and if your bullet cuts your rifling, your barrel will be toast!

There is one reliable way to achieve sub-MOA performance...practice. It's not a secret, some kind of trick, or a fancy new piece of gear. Without regular well planned practice, neither the best and most expensive equipment, the most carefully prepared load, nor the latest "secret" cleaning regimen will ever enable a shooter to reach their highest potential.

Go to the range (regulary!) and find the guys who do it consistantly,talk to them,pick their brains and be polite. You'll find most of the experienced guys in the shooting community are more than willing to share their knowledge. Be there when they are and shoot with them. When its time to rebarrel you'll probably be shooting pretty damn good! Stay away from the "experts" at the big retailers and the part time help at gun shops.
