Suppressors AAC 45 TiRant on a .308

Curiosity got the best of me today, so i decided to try my .45 Tirant on my Crusader. Attached with an adapter that goes from 5/8 to 1/2x28. I also fired a group with an AAC Cyclone and a group unsuppressed. Ammo used was subsonic 175 SMK from Southwest ammo fired at 110 yards.

First group is unsuppressed with the subsonic ammo.

Second group with the cyclone

third group was with the TiRant. Its the 5 shots to the upper left. I removed the suppressor rotated the piston then put it back on for two more shots that ended up to the right. Then five more shots with the cyclone in the black

I wasnt impressed with the accuracy at all with the 175's. My barrel is 1 in 11.25 and the 190's keyhole. I loaded up some 165 grain federal Fusion to make sure there wasnt something wrong with the rifle. Without the suppressor It put 8 shots within 1/2 inch just like this GAP rifle should. It will shoot the same with the cyclone using supersonic ammo.

You need to be very careful with this. Did you use the correct sleeve in the TiRant and proof the ammo before attaching the can to the 308 bolt action?

I do have my SOT and get different suppressors almost weekly. I do little tests like this all the time. But, you are absolutely correct. You have to be careful. Ammo was checked for keyholing before using the suppressor. and yes, the spring on the piston was replaced with the fixed barrel spacer before firing with the Ti-Rant 45. Definately not suitable for any type of precision use, but it is extremely quiet and better groups could be had with different ammo Im sure. I have fired the TiRant 45 on several calibers of handguns to machine guns and believe its one of the best "do all" suppressors on the market.

And for anyone else reading this:
DO NOT FIRE SUPERSONIC RIFLE AMMUNITION THROUGH THE TiRANT 45. My shooting was done with subsonic ammuniton only.

On a different but similar note, I run my 9mm Tirant all the time with 300 Blackout sub-sonic. 8 inch Noveske/3 lug
Quieter than my 30 cal cans

That's because 9mm and 45 cans are ideal for subsonic use. 300BLK is an ideal subsonic casing. I however would not run sub 308 thru the Osprey. It's not meant to run that close to the threshold of tolerances.

If your rifle .30 can won't handle a .30 subsonic as well as a pistol length 9mm or .45 can, well.....IMO...your .30 sucks, plain and simple. You sure don't need any more volume.....and the sloppy bore diameter of the pistol cans aren't going to help at all.

Fastest way to increase a cans accuracy? Open up the can's bore. In other words sending .30 through a .45 bore and getting reasonable accuracy is brain dead. Now stripping gas? Terrible. Getting suppression values? Lousy...unless you send through a bullet chased with a fraction of the original gas volume, in other words anemic subsonics. Even then your .30 should be much better. On a short barrel, all your doing is sending burning powder out of the pistol cans, especially with overbore.

The most interest part of the pics above is why your.30 can spreads at 100 yards with subs as much as it does. That is a large spread at that range. That is where I would be very curious.

Not sure if its the cans or the ammo. Both cans produce about the same size group but in different spots. Ill have a thunderbeast to try in A week or so. The cyclone does produce some amazing accuracy with supersonic ammo. Ill be trying some different subs as well to rule that out

The un-suppressed subsonic group without the can has approximately the same extreme spread as the other two suppressed groups.

One or two more rounds in the smaller part of the group (unsuppressed) is not very significant IMO based on ONE GROUP.

I think the gun appears to have shot the same with all three settups. More likely, the ammo has significant velocity difference from round to round and that is the cause of vertical group dispersion.


The difference between 1050 and 975FPS at 100 yards is significant.

I checked JBM ballistics with a 110 round nose and found 1.1" of vertical deviation will occur in 50 yards with 75FPS extreme spread.

(this based on a sight height of 0.0 and zero range of 50 yards, comparing 100 yard drop 9.1" at 1050, and 10.2" at 975)


On a recent range day, I found 3 types of ammo 920FPS SK Match, 980FPS SK+ and 995FPS CCI SV all patterned in the same general group at 50 yards.

1200FPS Fed Champion grouped about 2" high and 2" left of that subsonic POI, so apparently not windage and elevation can be effected by velocity. (granted that barrel had bad threads from PICO gunsmithing [the American Gunsmithing Institute]. <span style="font-weight: bold">So windage error may have been a result of a different effect caused by the suppressor's alignment error at different velocities. Ideally testing would be conducted with a good barrel thread. I've replaced that barrel with a KIDD recently. </span>
