Disregard if you feel it's stupid but I need some advice on the military service my "little" brother is thinking about. I served in the foreign military long time ago so I can't really guide him here.

He just graduated with a Bachelor degree in Homeland Security, with Honors. He is not really into civilian services, instead he wants to join the military and somewhat use the degree he has and go from there. One day he also wants to continue his education. He has a 4-year old kid and a mortgage, student loan to repay and a whole lotta other responibilities.

I guess what I am asking for him is what branch of the military you think will be the most optimum as far as career advancement, pay and benefits go? Also, how difficult it is to start, who to talk with to have hundreds of questions answered?

Thanks...

Not to point out the obvious but he might try a recruiter...

Please, go back to your Call of Duty or simply buy a new game...

No offense intended for your brother, and I admire him for wanting to serve our country in the military. I just don't appreciate the fact that one can get a degree in "Homeland Security" and land a civilian "job" working for a parasitic outfit that casts more suspicion on the American citizen than on the foreign terrorist peoples that deserve it.

And I don't even own a video game or whatever they're called.

Very few Devil Dogs my age do.

Good luck to your brother!

Re: ? About Military Service

If he had applied for, and was accepted for ROTC he wouldn't have these problems. Seems he actually had to avoid making that commitment.
He chose the major and to take out the loans. If "Civilian Service" isn't his liking, and I guess that means ATF, FBI, DEA, and ICE, I doubt he'll be happy in the Military. The pay is the same for all services, for equal rank.
He can attempt to enlist as a officer, but the guys and girls who were in ROTC and the Trade Schools (ike West Point, VMI, etc) are already golden for those slots.
Hopefully he took language classes there, and could apply for the Border Patrol or something, or enlist as a Enlisted man if he's not able to get a Commision. Unfortunately if he does that he would start at the bottom (like the rest of us did).
Nobody came and recruited him with his Honors and all?

Well in digging a little deeper, it's unfortunately not a transferable, i.e. traditional four year degree like you would get at a traditional university. So that probably means that he will not qualify for any officer position and will be heading in to the service as your basic enlisted E1/E2. That's a rough way to go, I went in as an E3 (CAP) and it's not for the family man/otherwise obligated due to the severer lack of pay. Your brother having a family, house, and all that needs to pursue something else like boarder patrol or a peeping tom gig at the TSA. Personally, if I were him I would go back to a traditional university and get an engineering degree (I did and am now a mechanical engineer) or a business degree.

Sorry for my over-reacting earlier but could you clarify please? I don't get it to tell you the truth. I believe there are 22 federal agencies within that department not to mention dozens of sub-entities.

If he wants a commission he qualifies academically for officer candidate school, as a federal law enforcement special agent, or an intelligence officer. </div></div>

You quoted their own site as a reliable source...? You have to dig deeper than that.

APUS is a for-profit company and not an accreditation group. DETC is an accreditation for correspondence/trade schools. These types of accreditation do not typically transfer to traditional universities, thus his degree doesn't hold nearly as much weight as a traditional university. So if he were to go to a traditional university he would have to start from scratch, much less be eligible for a legit grad school (masters/doctorates/JD/etc.)...

There are a lot of schools out there like this and you have to do the digging to peel back the layers, don't take things at face value... Even orgs listed in the DOE's list of accreditation are not vetted for legitimacy and are not audited. Hence with a little motivation you could have the High Binder University of Advanced Internet Pornography accredited and give out bachelors, masters and even doctorates (We'll have Shank teach the course on BBWs).

VYD, I think what he is saying is that just because a degree uses the same name as some Dept. doesn't mean that's it's affiliated in any way with that Dept. The rest of what he was saying was just a general bash on the peeping toms in the TSA who should are too consumed with PC security theater to actually go after the real bad guys, it nothing to do with your brother so he didn't mean it in an offensive way it was more of a joke on the sad state of our union.

I'd love to clarify but I'd prolly get slapped for talking politics.
PM sent.

Re: ? About Military Service

VYD, What does he want to do? you can go in and utilize the degree by looking to go into Army CID, or he could do something vastly different (IE, Infantry, FA etc...). Army and Marines run MPs in Garrison (At least that's my understanding on the Marines. I have zero experience with Navy or USAF so I'll let someone else answer those).

If his degree is slated as fully accredited, he can go for a "College Option" OCS slot. He would enlist, going through Basic, go through OCS, then go through his branch school. It will not give him nearly the same experience that West Point/VMI/ROTC/Prior enlisted will, but it is an option.

Otherwise, there's a whole alphabet soup of government agencies that he could work for.

Honestly, the best thing, if he does want to serve, is go down to the local mall with all 5 services (don't forget the coasties) and talk with the recruiters. Good luck, and don't sign anything unless he reads it!
