About to purchase a Kestrel.. need opinions

Re: About to purchase a Kestrel.. need opinions

To make a complex answer simple, get at least the 4000 so you can record your dope based on density altitude. The 4500 has a compass and crosswind feature that you may or may not use. I'd suggest a 4000 with bluetooth ahead of a 4500. The NV models are backlit, won't be that useful unless you shoot at night. The Atrag ballistics models have a ballistic calculator built in, up to you if you want to spring for that as it adds several hundred bucks to the price. Personally I think phone apps do a decent job for a lot less money.

We sell ours at the lowest allowed prices by Kestrel if you need one. http://www.impactdatabooks.com/Tools_s/128.htm The Kestrel with Horus gives you the balistic data. If you like HORUS and want to run your data that way it is a good unit, as it takes your environmental data info and puts into into the equation. To me unless you are military/LE you dont need the NV!!

HunterH -

Both links you have listed point to 4500 NV's with Horus software. Essentially exactly the same units. They don't have Bluetooth.

If your going to be looking at the Kestrel + Horus, I defiantly suggest you get the Bluetooth. The link to the Amazon one doesn't include Bluetooth. I think the lowest I see them online is around $699 (Minimum Advertised Price - like NOMAD said above).

You want the Bluetooth because to use the Horus software to its potential, you want to run the Horus Gun Loader software. This lets you modify the guns (and associated ballistic info) on the PC then send to Kestrel, rather than trying to do it manually on the Kestrel device. You can go with the (very slightly) cheaper wired interface but then it gets lost, or else you have to deal with cables.

How do yall sell them for so cheap? Your site is even cheaper than ebay for used units. Are yall having a sale or something?

Don't forget to check local sales sites like craigslist. I found a great Kestrel 4000 almost brand new for $100, and it wasn't stolen either. It may not have been my first choice, but for the price I didn't complain. It does plenty of what I need:

density alt
barometric pressure
temp
altitude
humidity
wind speed

Most of the other functions I look at, but don't use much.
