About using 7.62x51 ammo in a .308 rifle.

I'm new to here and precision rifles. I did some research and learned that it is safe to fire a 7.62x51 ammo in a .308 rifle but might not be vice versa. I also found that some precision rifle model will explicitly treat them as different cartridges (e.g. MRAD has a .308 win barrel and MRAD MK22 has a 7.62x51mm barrel.). My question is: Does firing 7.62x51 ammunition in a .308 caliber gun affect its durability or reduce the accuracy of the bullets?
