How come you don't see accuracy international used much by the top 50 prs shooters out there? Is custom that much better to go with?

First thing that comes to mind is trigger weight.
Lots of those PRS shooters are using a trigger weight (4-6 ounces), which is under what even the Accuracy International Competition Trigger is advertised at (12 ounces).

Yes I can see that. It seems like the competition trigger would help things out some though.
My money would be on this:

Sponsorship and advertising is a big part of it. New companies are willing to give away their products and gift certificate, etc to gain traction in the market.
Also cost, an AT will be around 4K and an AX more like 6-7k
A used AE is a fine rifle and can be had for less than 3k but does lack a few bells and whistles.

If I were shooting a match that was heavy on prone stages or more of a field type match, I'd definitely shoot my AI. For more barricade and run n' gun matches I like my GAP rifle.

It’s mainly sponsorship as noted, they don’t give anything away.
The Team AI guys have won several matches but the whole effort has faded. No or very little ROI for them in PRS. Guy do use them and have done well with them.

I'll be honest @Lowlight, it's really hard to leave my AXMC in the safe for matches. Especially now that I have the SFP bolt.
I am not a top shooter and have only been doing the PRS style shoots for a couple years but I only run an AI. AE MKiii if want to shoot 308. AT for 6.5 Creedmoor. But hey that’s just me.
I believe Jon Roberts now of Team AI finished top 10 at the finale last year running an AI AX. Team Captain Matt Gervais was second at the AI Classic last year.... Kevin Shepard is constantly near the top at a lot of matches as well. Cory West and Rhett Walters are always solid shooters also.

I’d say maybe depending on where you are located in the country Team AI has a pretty big footprint and are very noticeable in the sport. They have shown up to help many AI shooters as well as other shooters in the sport.

Personally, I'd say it's largely due to being proprietary as hell. You're locked into the chassis it comes with, and the only trigger option is the new comp trigger. Most people want to customize the shit out of their rifles to get them set up exactly how they want them, and don't want to be locked into the factory chassis and trigger.

You can adjust the factory trigger down to about 1.5lbs. But being drop safe off safety is iffy. (To be fair, there aren’t many triggers that are drop safe out there, at least under 2.5lbs)

I'd also say the chassis are not made for PRS the way others are. Look at the ACC, MPA, etc. That now have weight kits to alter the balance or your rifle. Plus, such things like the angle of the forend on the AT and the palm grip of the AX aren't great for PRS either. Look at Sam making the AX/AT chassis and it looks basically like the ACC. That shape is much better suited for PRS.
I agree with some. Not all points.
We use bags so much now I don’t think the area around the magwell on AT or AX really matter. Most times a bag is there anyway.
With the AI and Victor m lok rails coming out, it will be interesting to see if people start adding the mdt weights to the AX.
4 years ago when I started people were complaining that AIs were too heavy for matches. Now apparently they aren't heavy enough lol.
I think it’s the lack of customization. People want to tinker. Me, I would rather dial a rifle in and leave it once it’s there.
One of the biggest things AI has going for them is reliability. I’ll run my AXMC in any weather against any other rifle. I bet theirs fails before mine. I love knowing how reliable my rifle is.

Ya, it’s funny. I remember just a year ago when magpul announced the pro 700, some guys on here were saying they were late to party because everyone was going with light chassis. Basically said they had no clue what customers were looking for.
Fast forward a year and everyone is trying to run a 25lb+ 6dasher.

@Dthomas3523 like it or not, the game has changed and moved away from practicality. It's a run n gun game now and will be until MDs see a reason to revert back the practical side of things.
I've got a long list of 'old-school' concepts I want to bring back when I get the chance to run a 2-day PRS match. True KYLs, hostages, blind and semi-blind stages, UKD (with ideas on how to keep people from sharing it), long-duration/high movement stages, limited gear (both by rule and circumstance), etc.
I don't think I'll ever be a top-50 PRS shooter, but in a couple months' time I'll have my new AI chassis in hand. I have all the quotes back from the machine shop, once I finalize the prints I will be placing the order. I've been given a tentative timeline, I'll call it ~3 months.
It's anyone's guess if people will really be willing to de-bond their AIs once they see how my chassis turns out, but at the end of the day I'll have one to test

I'm not a top end shooter, in fact, I'm the worst in PRS North East, apparently
It's a great "as is" rifle, that you can change calibers conveniently.
Personally, I've had too many issues with 700 actions, to give them another chance. YMMV.
- No free AI rifles at competitions
- Perceived inferior trigger because it's "too heavy" (I saw 2 triggers go down in my last match.)
- The chassis, like a good motorcycle, either fits you or doesn't.

The bolt lift has less to do with the speed you can operate the bolt at and more with the perceived weight of the bolt lift, I believe.
Because the AI is a 60 degree bolt throw with no fancy extras to make the lift lighter (like Curtis Customs and their roller bearing cocking cams), it has a heavier bolt lift. The heavier bolt lift is fine on prone stages, or other stages where you have a lot of support for the rifle, but is less than ideal on stages where you might want to do something like free-recoil the rifle. Instead of just running the bolt without thinking about it, you have to do a bit more to hold the rifle in place and prevent it from moving off target as you lift the bolt. With a 25+ pound gun and a light 90* bolt lift (like an Impact Precision), the gun doesn't move at all and you stay on target pretty much the whole time.
That said, I agree it's a minimal complaint and doesn't really matter in the end. I just think it has different reasoning than what you mentioned.
I'd also like to throw in that running your bolt fast is not conducive to being a better PRS shooter. Ramming that bolt back and forth as fast as possible is only going to hurt your times and scores - you want to be smooth on the bolt for a couple of reasons: 1. keep the rifle on target rather than jerking it around, 2. limiting your chances of short stroking and inducing feeding issues.
Manipulating the bolt fast in PRS is overrated, and always find that argument about 60* actions silly. The fastest and most precies stage shooters, such as Matt B. and David Preston, both run their bolts slowly and smoothly.
Agreed, speed on the bolt will hurt you more often than it helps you. When you've got a steady shooting position built up already it makes the most sense to just manipulate the bolt nice and smooth so that you don't disturb the way your rifle sits at all. If you can do that you'll gain a lot of time anyways because as soon as the bolt is closed you can start to squeeze the trigger.
I like my Impact particularly because it just makes everything feel so smooth. It's about 50/50 for cock on open vs cock on close, and that means the bolt lift is super light. I usually just pinch the knob lightly between my thumb and the knuckle of my index finger to move the bolt since it means I barely have to do anything besides just rotate my wrist back and then forwards again to cycle the action. It sits pretty steady on a barricade or other obstacle while running the bolt, but then again I'm shooting one of those 28 pound rifles so they're hard to move around in the first place.
I shoot an AX in competition. I have been running it for the last 4 years in PRS. Last year was my worst overall points finish and still top 25. TmThe chassis is not for everyone but it is very manageable for something that is not purposed built for shooting PRS like other chassis. I ran the original factory trigger for 3 years and tuned it down to a crisp 1.5ish # that would pass a drop test. Now, i am running the comp trigger at just under 1# and love it. No problems at all, even in the finale last year that claimed a few different triggers like the TT and BnA due to the blowing dust/sand. FYI, 2 AIs finished tied in the top 10 there and i think 3 or 4 total in the top 25. The bolt lift is a non issue. I think it is mostly people who have not run their rifle much or have not run an AI at all claiming this. I do not have any trouble staying on target when running a bolt on a barricade or free recoiling off of a bag. Maybe it is a function of how i run the bolt or maybe just how many times I've cycled my action. Across the 4 AXs ive had, they have all taken a few rounds to break in and smooth out to where they are now but i haven't ever had a problem there.
If i were to guess why there is a perception that AIs are not finishing in the top 25 is that they are expensive and there are a lot of great options for guys to run nearly half of the cost of an AX. They are not a PRS purpose built rifle and lack some of the design focused around the sport since they are generally built/designed around a govt spec. Also, they are polarizing with the ergonomics. While extremely adjustable and easy to fit to a shooter, they will never have a traditional Manners/McMillian/ Foundation feel, nor do they have the modularity of a MPA, XLR, MDT for different grips, butt stocks, weight kits, barricade stops and wedges...etc. You pretty much get what you see and either like it or not like many have said. Finally AI's business model is not set up around PRS sales like many other companies. Their advertising budget is focused, mainly like their design efforts, on the mil/leo and not PRS at the moment. So, you will not likely see them be advertised as the official chassis, action, rifle, whatever of the prs like some others. Those are just my thoughts and experiences, like always ymmv.

I only shoot at the club level for the time being, but I've shot all but one match with my AI AT. Every match I look around and do what most people do and think to myself 'wow, that's neat. Look at that, that looks very handy. I wish I could adjust that. Damn, my rifle wont do that' etc. However, and it NEVER FAILS one of those rifles is going to go down. Rain was keeping a guys firing pin from engaging, sears have hung up, off-brand (Yes if it doesn't say AI and its an AI style magazine, it's an off brand) magazines don't feed, one of the wiz-bang items wont adjust right, and so on and so forth. You know what has never been an issue at a match? My AI rifle. Me, well that's a different story all together.
I don't have endless amounts of free time, as I'm sure most don’t. The peace of mind I get showing up at a match with an AI is certainly worth something knowing it was designed for a much more austere environments than I’ll ever use it in. A lot of the club matches in Kentucky focus on keeping things more 'old school' and closer to a field match (i.e. one bag per stage, no crazy gamer gear, etc.) so I have never felt truly under equipped with my AT. I've never had a major issue on barricade stages with the 'heavy' bolt lift. Just run in smoothly and keep your magnification dialed back and you'll be fine. I bought the comp trigger, and actually increased the weight to a very nice 2# with almost zero over travel. I have no need and added expense for a 'trainer' as I can put on my 308 or 6.5 CM barrel to practice, and switch to my 6XC barrel for comps. 10 round double stacked AW mags are excellent. The RRS plate is a great bag rider. Sawtooth makes a full ARCA rail if you want that (going to try one evenetually).

I'm in the same boat as Ozzy. I primarily shoot my AXMC in matches. I won our last local match with it.
I built what was supposed to be a competition gun this spring and I've only used it once. Mainly because I can't get comfortable behind the thing like I can my AI. There's a good chance it will be on the chopping block so I can buy an AT or add stuff to my AX.

What is the practical side of things. There had always been a PRS barricade design out there. Is that “ run and and gun “
Barricades are practical. In fact they're some of my favorite stages. That being said, swinging props like at the finale are not practical. 4x8 sheets of plywood suspended from chains, though fun are not practical. So on an so forth. Doesn't mean they're not enjoyable just means its not a situation the vast majority of us will encounter while hunting.
I have an AI and absolutely love it, probably my favorite rifle. However I use my MDT/Impact in matches because for me it is easier to shoot. I would say it is a combo of balance, weight, and trigger (no it's not 4-6 oz lol, more like 1.3-1.4lb). The Impact is just stupid smooth!
After reading this thread though I am motivated to take my AI to my next match. There are plenty of good shooters that do well with AI. If I don't do well it sure isn't the rifle's fault!! Feeling a little guilty about the extended safe time it's gotten over the last year!

very curious about these mlok rails you mentioned. I’m trying to add weight to front of AIAT for prs style matches. Have found a few mlok weight kits, however can’t find anyway to get mlok on my side rails of AT. Any input would be greatly appreciated
I’ve shot with Preston numerous times, very smooth on bolt! Definition of “smooth is fast” .
I think he’s referring to the AI ASR forend, and the Victor Co Hammer rail for the current gen AX.
I have an AT forend weight kit in work, still gotta finalize quotes. It will be 24oz for the kit, with 2 MLok slots per side if you want to add a pair of MDT weights.

Like driving a car at the race track. Slamming your foot on the gas pedal and slamming on the brakes end up shifting the balance of the vehicle poorly and can break traction. On the other hand, driving smooth is fast. May not feel as fast, but smooth usually maintains a higher average speed than going super heavy on brake/gas/brake/gas cycle.
