Howdy all.

Id love to try out some Ackely Improved ammo. Im thinking maybe 223 or 243.

But do any companies even build Ackley Improved rifles? Or will I have to go down the custom route? And where could I even source Ackely ammo?

And can I ask, if Ackely Improved are as good as people say, then why are virtual no shooters using it?

Re: Ackely Improved

I will go on a limb and say you'll probably have to go custom. I would also suggest reloading if you go the AI route. I have seen very few factory ammunition offerings. You'll save money and gain precision.

As far as it being superior, I personally don't think its worth the trouble, fire-forming and all. To each his own.

Re: Ackely Improved

The main thing for me is that my 22-250 streached really bad and the AI stopped all of that. You can'y justify the cost and extra work involved in an AI unless you just like things like that. Also, plan to handload for any AI. Lightman

Re: Ackely Improved

I like the ackley rounds. I cant decide if there worth it or not. I have built several for customers, the 280, 243 and 25/06 Ackleys are my favorite and there just sexy looking.

Re: Ackely Improved

You don't see them much, but then again, you might not have noticed. In competition the brass loss might be an issue.

Re: Ackely Improved

If you check varmint and benchrest forums I think you'll find many, many people running Ackleys.

I've tried the 223, 22-250. 243, 6mm Rem, and 257 Roberts, all in Ackley guise. I may have forgotten one or two.

The primary advantage is case life. Anything else is open to debate.

Some of the Ackley rounds do fill a niche.

The 243 Ackley is one hell of a round. It's the only one of the bunch I still use.

Oddly enough, I've never found the feeding troublesome from my 700's.

Indeed. Swift performance with a much better case.

Never had an issue with feeding in any of the multiple 243AI and 223AI rifles I have had.

I agree, both my 22-250AI and 223AI feed better than the standard versions in my setups

No problems with mine either.
They feed as smooth as silk.

How many Ackleys have you owned?
What type(s) of magazine systems were you using?
How often did you need to trim your brass?

Re: Ackely Improved

I've owned four and still have one. 3 repeaters and one single shot. sometimes you have to open up lips and feed ramps but they all basically feed the same. a 260ai with extra fb could fit a long action pretty easily. rather than go through all that though, I think I'd just do a 6.5-06.

+1 on the reloading. Ya gotta go there or go home.
I have a 280AI on a Remmy standard action w/ BDL floorplate. Feeds flawlessly (although I can't get but 4 down & 1 up for this. 5 down creates a problem on mine). I buy Nosler brass, (pricey but worth it). 168g Berger at 2950 fps. .5-.6MOA rifle. 1400+ rounds downrange. Brass fired 15 times. Trimmed twice (once when new and once again a long time later....can't remember). Just now losing a little accuracy..... .7-8 MOA. Still minute of Elk/deer/pig/yote/zombies! I love my AI. Good luck.
