I was at a local gun shop today and seen a NIB ACOG TA01 for $700. Is this a good deal and for this optic? I will be using it on my patrol rifle so ranges may vary. I just dont know about the 4X optic for any CQB situations. Any help would be great.

If I were a LEO, I'd be looking for a EOtech or Aimpoint though. Just think, when was the last time a LEO needed bullet drop indexed lines for 500 meters in the States? IMHO

The ACOG would be nice for a spotter’s rifle but I think it would be too much for my entry gun. Besides I don’t usually have a spotter or act as one. Or you could put a J-point on top of it and have the best of both worlds. Here's my rifle from my last tour. That was Afghanistan where you need to be able to see aways at times and the Acoq helped a lot for that. And the J-point was used for close in work. I have a personal TA01 and another Acoq at home with a factory Doctor sight on it. Did I mention that I like Acoqs?

I had thought about the doc optics route aswell I just need to get one and try it i guess. Have you thought about any of the 1-4x scope's? The Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x SPC is a good one, IOR makes a new one called the "Pitbull" thats a 1 to 4x, not a zoom. They also make a 1.5-8x that would be great on an AR. NF makes a good one (1-4x) as do many other's. Reddot's are great if ALL you do is CQB work and work well with NV. But if you need to make a precision shot past 50 - 75 yards it becomes more difficult. That TA01 is a top notch sight for an AR, one of the best. But it works best from 50 yards on out. I wish I could tell you to buy the Pitbull, but it's brand new and I have never tried it. IOR does have great glass and a very good retical, and the concept of going from 1x to 4x with a quick switch is something I have always liked. (Who uses 2 & 3x in a 1-4x scope??) The Leupold is a very good unit for what you want / need and it's tried and true. So is the NF and a few other's though. Take a good look at this type of sighting system, try not to limit yourself to one thing. Someday, someones life may depend on it. Good luck with your pick.

Thanks for the advise and yes i had thought of that. However i really like the rear sight on my LMT and really dont know how a scope would work out on it. I guess i would have the same problem with the ACOG too for that matter. I guess I will just hafta take it with me next time am at my local shop and try mounting different things and see witch works the best for my needs.

FWIW - I have had the TA01 and now have a TA31 (red doughnut). I have been shooting an RDS a lot more over the last couple of years but used to shoot a lot with the ACOG. Since I hadn't done it in a while, last week I took my 16" with TA31 and 10.5" with an Aimpoint to the range to compare against a timer. T1, T2, and T3 were 7, 10, and 15 yrds respectively. T4 was 30yrds, T5 and T6 were 75 yrds.
It took me exactly 4 runs to get back up to speed with the ACOG. From then on the times were within a few /100s with better accuracy on the 75 yrd targets. It showed the biggest advantage with snap shots at 30 and 75. The advantage become more pronounced as the distance grows but you really need to fight the tendency continue receiving visual inputs from the optic eye as you scan when the distance increases.
The brain training to actively use both eyes independently to search with the non optic eye and then lock on with the optic eye is the key. Wanna go fast up close? Shoot steel with frangible for a while. Up close is largely index, trusting that your cheekweld is grooved, and that you will make A zone hits based the dual visual inputs that you are processing at once, your tempo from target to target, and your trigger control. Going fast at a distance is requires scanning with the non optic eye, as you swing on to the target transition to inputs from the optic eye, break the shot, then switch back to the non optic eye to continue to scan. The faster you can shift input reception the faster you can shoot.
I am not a fan of the RDS stacked on the ACOG as it promotes bobbing the head up and down - time waster.
IMHO the ACOGs with the fiber on top are easier to shoot fast in close. The doughnut / chevron / horseshoe really grab your attention.

You also want to make sure you've got the TA01 to match your AR. If you've got a flattop adapter, then I believe it's technically the TA01NSN. If not, the standard TA01 attaches to a carry handle. If you get that model, just snap a LaRue mount onto it and you'll be GTG.
In terms of use, I've got the TA01NSN on my M4 right now. I like it better than the TA31 because there's no chance of washout, and I like the added precision of crosshairs. That's simply a personal thing. Granted, the chevron is perhaps better suited for picking up movers, but I can also say that most of the guys here with TA31s have told me they'd rather have the TA01NSN on their rifles. Not a scientific study, but that's the consensus.
If you're going to be doing primarily CQB, EoTech is a great option. I don't like them for anything much over 200m because to me, the ACOG and Aimpoints are both superior ranged optics, IMO. Just figure out how many engagements you'll have under 25m versus over 25m and let that make your decision. If I'm going to have 5 short engagements to every 1 ranged engagement, I'll probably go with an EoTech. If it's the other way around, then the ACOG.

Again I cannt thank you guys enought for your input and help. I have narrowed it down to the ACOG or Aimpoint. I have owened and ran the Eotechs before and just never cared for them. I will be going next week to the shop and will try them both but as of right now I think I am leaning more in the way of the Aimpoint. I figure if I need something out past 100m thats why I also carry a Remington 700. Just a thought.

I would keep your BUIS no matter what, they can be used near or far. As for the ACOG vs. Aimpoint, you could use both. By that I mean, if you have them both on LaRue QC mount's you can pop the one on that best suits the mission at the time. You put a small rubber stop or mark the lug on the rail where you like the sight to be so it goes back to the same spot each time. Also with a LaRue mount, if something happens to the sight during a mission you can pop it off and go to your BUIS in the blink of an eye. (And go with LaRue, ARMS mount's are good, but harder to put on under stress and are not quite as accurate at longer ranges.) However, I still say one sight that can do it all is the way to go. It's much better to train with the same thing over and over and know it inside & out. And I would still put it on a LaRue mount.

Whatever I decide to go with I will be using LaRue mounts. If I go with the Aimpoint I will be getting the combo from LaRue. I will be using a Pelican or Star case for transport so I could just have both sights in it so I would have rapid change over for any situation. Nothing wrong with having both right?

I love the TAO1 NSN,I use it a lot for night hunting in conjunction with a M6X Insight,the laser is set to cross(on el)at 80yds,very accurate and fast.I have used that rifle and ACOG for almost 5 years now,but I have thought about putting a DR on top.

It's a very good deal for someone who expects a 300 to 600 meter range finding and/or BDC need, or perhaps, just needs to identify targets at mid range distances. The ACOG design allows for very good quick hits on E type targets as it's BDC/rangfinding reticle requires no mental calculations other than for wind or slope.
The Aimpoint's parallax free design allows a shooter, who can execute the firing task, yet, who may not know the first thing about good shooting, to get good hits at relatively close distances, on relatively big targets, with a center of mass hold. With such a sight, there's nothing the shooter needs to align or focus on, and a stock weld is not needed for good hits. It kinda makes the first principle of marksmanship moot.
Here's an idea, spend your money on a little BRM training, then you will recognize you can do anything with your rifle's BDC irons that a lesser skilled shooter would think only possible with something like an ACOG or Aimpoint.
Don't read me wrong, the Aimpoint and ACOG are really magnificent devices, which may provide a better understanding for where the barrel is pointed than with issue irons, in some scenarios; but, as I interpreted your question, I think you may not yet understand that your iron sights are pretty magnificent too.

The TA01 has a BDC out to 800 yards, has a red ret. that glows fully.
The TA01NSN has less of the BDC in the retical, out to around 5-600 yards I think, it has a yellowish glow instead of the red, and the part that glow's is much smaller than the std. TA01.

TA01 is also meant to be mounted on a carry handle and calibrated for M193 fired from a 20" M16, the TA01NSN is calibrated for M855 from a 14.5" M4 mounted on the picatinny rail.
I'm not sure what the newer models with the BAC are calibrated for.

Problem is,you can't Co-Witness an ACOG or anything like it,IMHO,as far as I know,when I had my first ACOG on a Colt Carbine,the front sight was a small shadow,almost un-noticible.I think the only way to Co-witness is with an EOtech or Aimpoint type sight.

Problem is,you can't Co-Witness an ACOG or anything like it,IMHO,as far as I know,when I had my first ACOG on a Colt Carbine,the front sight was a small shadow,almost un-noticible.I think the only way to Co-witness is with an EOtech or Aimpoint type sight.

Forget "co-witness", it never works good. If you have a good QC mount you can pop the scope off in no time should you need to do so. Having both the ACOG & an Aimpoint on LaRue mounts would be great, with BUIS at the ready. (I like folding ones.) But with one good scope that can do both CQB & has at least 4x and a good BDC out to 400+ yards can't be beat. Esp. once you know it inside and out at both up close and out to distance. Knowing one thing really well is the best way to go, and you don't run the risk of having a scope go on "not just right" and having it out of zero.

With the aimpoints I have ADM mounts, stock front sight towers and hacked carry handles as a rear BUIS. I open up the large aperture just a touch (forget the bit size - but it is just the next size or two up) and then hit it with some flat black from a rattle can to get rid of the shine. I zero the irons at 50, adj the dot to the irons, and confirm the dot at 50. I am a dinosaur and like absolute co-witness and a fixed BUIS system. When the dot goes down there is no change in anything. I often turn the dot off at the square range for practice. A grooved cheek weld goes a very long way toward evening out the differences between a dot and irons.

That sounds about like my setup. LMT Defender 2000, Sopmod stock, LMT Rear Sight MK18 MOD 0 style, A2 Front. I was considering the XS rear sight because it is a bigger diameter than standard. I had never thought of just drilling out the standard that’s good thinking. I have decided that I am officially going with the Aimpoint M3 with LaRue mount. I tried a friend of mines this week and I really liked the setup and think it will work the best for what I want. The ACOG is still an option and a future 18" build I will be starting in the next few months. Again thanks to every one for there input and knowledge you are a great group of guys and very helpful.
