Rifle Scopes ACOG TA33 or Leupold MK4 1.5-5???

Looking for some good advice from the operational pros out there... for a duty patrol rifle, M&P 15T with the free floating 16in barrel, I want an optic with some magnification though I still want to be able to access my BUIS if the SHTF and the optic becomes inoperable. I'm currently looking at the TA33R ACOG with the La Rue 105 mount, but I've also considered the benefits of a variable power Leupold MK4 1.5-5 with the illuminated reticle, and with La Rue mount/rings. I did not like the chevron reticle of my Trijicon tripower (just couldn't figure out the best way to get it zeroed... just above the tip? right behind the tip?) so I was thinking about the horseshoe reticle for the TA33 which I believe has a 2 MOA dot. I want to be able to do T-zone head shots at 100 yards. Obviously the Leupold will be a little more accurate with the 1/2 MOA dot and cross hair setup, but I want something that I can throw against the asphalt and still have it be zeroed. No batteries is also a plus. Any suggestions, ideas or experience with either/both sights would be appreciated. I've read a few small reviews on this site for both optics, but I think they were both a few years old. Just looking for some fresh feedback.

I think the SPR reticule is to small and thin for any fast CQB use,longer shots its nice.

Its a nice scope and the newer models have better Illumination nob with off stops between each setting,also they are brighter..

The ACOG may be a better all around optic for 50 yards and out CQB is game on if you can use the BAC, Zero the chevron at the tip..

aimpoint or eotech with a flip mag would be my choice for CQB to 150 yards on a patrol weapon..

I am not an "elite operator," but here is my 2 cents

I use a Leupold for three gun/range, but i would never trade the ACOG on my M4.... I mean...the rifle will fall apart before the ACOG will. Totally reliable and hold zero even if you bang it around a bit. Can't really say the same for the MK4.

Will the MK4 1.5-5 stay zeroed after rattling around in the back of my squad for weeks before being re-zeroed every few weeks? The ACOGS just seem so SOLID. I did zero my Tripower at the tip but it just didn't quite take. At 100 yards, I never really felt all that great about that tip hovering around my intended POI and not really trusting that I had it zeroed right on the perfect little tip. Maybe it was just me. I'm more of a crosshairs kind of guy.

TA33 is whats on my LWRC that I carry for a patrol rifle. Granted its in a hard case in the trunk but its never lost zero. With the Larue mount it can be removed in seconds. It replaced an Eotech and I have NO regrets.

As a Patrol Rifle Instructor, I discourage magnified optics for a good "all around" patrol rifle. You may want to consider an Aimpoint or EoTec for CQB work. Allows both eyes to be open, provies wider field of view, and facilitates good peripheral vision... something that is generally lost when focusing on a magnified optic. Also allows easy access to your BUIS.

Then, you can get a 3x magnified with quick disconnect for those times you are on a perimeter at extended ranges.

I've handled EoTechs with the magnifiers and they are just to bulky and heavy for me. That's why I went with the ACOG. The TA 33R is a solid choice. If you get the chevron you zero it at 100 yards at the tip of the chevron.

I have the Mk 4 with a burris fast fire on a badger rail cap with the 30mm rings. I used an Acog in the mil and found it to be very useful, but like all things the fixed 4 power has its limitations. I have used an old aimpoint 5000 with the 2x for cqb but the distortion of 2x was a little strange. but at 100 meters the 2x was great especially on movers. I have found the 1.5 is not bad for close in work, but that is what the fast fire is for.

my set up looks something like this, although I put the red dot in front of the MK4 elevation knob so I can see where my dope is set.

I've used Eotechs quite a bit and only have a little experience with the Aimpoints. I am sure that I want some magnification and I have the experience to make it work for me, though I would never knock anyone for using a non-magnified optic. I just want something that I can shoot MOA at 100 for more precision shots, but is still good for CQB. And I don't want to have to worry about batteries.
Anyone ever hear of red-dot-scopes.com? They appear to have the best deal right now for the TA33's at $828, but I don't want to deal with any company that can dick you around. I almost ordered one from Botach until I read a bunch of reviews about them being hinky.

I am no professional but have had many of each of the mentioned optics and use them in the field quite often.

I have had several ACOGs. The cross hair reticles were ruined by having a dedicated line for 100 & 200 yards. With a 5.56 trajectory that is basically just one heavy line. The chevron reticles were very hard to zero especially with changing light. In bright day light I had to actually put tape over the light bar to reduce reticle bloom, the blooming reticle is what caused the varying POI. The final straw for me was examining 3 ACOGs with a collimator, I was very unhappy with the sloppy reticle movement while adjusting the turrets - in all 3.

I just got a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x ($469 @ Midway). In a nice 1 pice mount like Larue or AD this thing is a lot better than any of my 4 ACOGs. Not perfect but waaay better.

Both of my Aimpoints were great except the dots flared quite a bit, probably due to my astigmatism (not the aimpoints fault but still not very useable for me). I do not like Eotechs due to their comparatively poor battery life vs aimpoint. The small 1 moa dot did flare less but that doesn't matter if the battery is dead.

I have the TA33 with the Green Horseshoe retile and if allowed, I would use it for Patrol Duty, But I have to use the EOTech, which is also an excellent optic. The TA33 is great for Patrol use, unless you are just going to be doing entry work. Since you indicated you wanted magnification, then the TA33 shouldn't be a problem. I've also shot the Leupold and it is very good, but the reticle is pretty thin and not a true 1x scope. Out of those two, I'd take the TA33 hands down. lighter and tougher. And with practice, it is very fast up close.

Paulosantos, what do you think of the horseshoe reticle? Is the dot 2 MOA and how do you like it for the precision/distance stuff? I'm leaning towards this reticle in red if I go with the TA33.

I have the TA33 with red chevron mounted on my LMT gas piston via LaRue mount, and love it. Botach Tactical sells them for $799, and is where I bought mine from. I can make repeated hits on a 18x24 steel plate at 700-yards with this set-up using BHA 77-gr match ammo.

If I had to do it again, I would go with the same scope/mount. I don't use this, or plan to use it for CQB. In that enviroment I'd go with a Tri-Power.

Sold a Trijicon Tripower to fund the TA33 for the magnification. That's impressive with the chevron, Alpine 338, especially at that distance. You think MOA would be pretty easy then at 100 yards with a free floating 16in barrel with the chevron? I was kind of attracted to the horseshoe reticle because it looked a little bit like an Eotech reticle and thought it might pick up a little better for CQB. I have time with the chevron but haven't dicked around with the horseshoe one in person though. It's hard to spend nearly a grand on an optic/mount setup without ever seeing the reticle in person.

The 2MOA dot is very accurate. I find it much more accurate then the chevron. If you want to do accuracy testing, just use the round targets and center the dot on the target. It is also perfect for the man sized targets for the head shots. It is the only ACOG reticle that I'll ever buy again. And since you're familiar with the EOTech horseshoe reticle, the ACOG Horseshoe reticle will be easy for you to pick up. I took it out to 300 yards and worked great. Once you get to 300 yards and further, you will be using the holdover lines, which is pretty much the same for all of the ACOG reticles.

Botach had a bad reputation for a reason. They were bad, but that has changed in the past year. If you order from them, give them a call and see if they'll give you an LE discount.

paulosantos, you sealed it for me. Just ordered a TA33R-H (the red horseshoe model) and the La Rue 105 mount to go with it. Used red-dot-sights.com for the sight and went through La Rue directly for the mount. The La Rue guy seemed pretty solid and had me do a pretty funny over the phone test for the LEO discount. He then asked me about the Westbro Baptist Church (seeing I was from KS) and we proceeded to BS about how someone needs to kill them the next time they protest someone's funeral. I guess they're protesting at the funeral of the little girl who was killed during the mass shooting in AZ. I've never heard someone in customer service say, "Someone needs to murder those fucks" over the phone. Was pretty funny.
Anyway, thanks for all the advice, guys. I'll post some pics when it's all in.

For the horseshoe reticle, is there any BDC for 200 and 300? Also... if you're zeroed at 100 yards, what would be your best point of aim for 25 yards? 50 yards?

For the horseshoe, you zero the dot at 100 yards or meters. The TA33 is calibrated for the M855 ammo at 2900 fps, which is pretty standard. It is calibrated for meters with a 100 meter zero and the tip of the BDC line is for 300 meters, then 400, 500, 600. You don't want a 200 meter line. It would be too close and too cluttered. I had the TA31 and it was too cluttered with the 200 meter line. Here are the trajectories of the TA33 with the M855 ammo:

Center dot: 100 meters
300 meters: -13" drop -3.8 MOA
400 meters: -32.3" drop -7.0 MOA
500 meters: -63.8" drop -11.2 MOA
600 meters: -111.9" drop -16.3 MOA

Now if you are using standard 55 Gr ammo, it will be pretty close. Actually, with most ammo with a 100 yard zero, you will be pretty much dead on out to 300 yards. If you plan on shooting farther, you may have to make some minor adjustments. Here is an example of the trajectories with a 100 yard zero and some standard 55 GR ammo:

Center dot: 100 yards
50 yards: -.7" drop. (so at 50 yards, you just have to hold the center dot up .7")
25 yards: -1.5" drop -5.8 MOA (so you can hold the center dot up 1.5" or use the 300 meter line as it will be pretty close.)
200 yadrs: -2.9" drop -1.4 MOA
300 yards: -13.2" drop -4.2 MOA (as you can see, it is pretty close and you will not have any problems hitting man sized targets at 300 yards.).

We're running 55 grain Federal TRU SP rounds. It would probably be fine, but I was thinking about bumping it up to something a bit heavier anyways. Thanks again for the advice.

Even with the heavier bullets, it will be pretty much the same at 25, 50, 200, and 300 yards. Heavier bullets have a lower velocity, but higher BC.

You shouldn't have any issues at 100-yards. I've had bad luck with AR's in general as far as accuracy and reliability, both personally owned, and the one's I was issued in the military, with the exception of my first AR, which was a SP-1 carbine and my latest gas piston LMT. ACOG reticles are calibrated for the M885 (62-gr) at sea level, but as said earlier, you shouldn't see much variation at the close ranges. Enjoy the scope, they are awesome for the size and weight. As far as my LMT, I'm overly impressed with it's accuracy, plus I was shooting off a bag on a bench at the 700-yard steel.

I went with the horseshoe reticle in red. It should be here early next week, and I should have it zeroed late in the week or on the weekend. Will probably qualify with it within the next two weeks depending on the weather. I'll probably split the difference between 100 meters and 100 yards for the zero. For duty purposes, I don't anticipate an operational shot longer than 100 yards, though 200 is possible. I have another weapon system for that - given deployment time. Received mount from La Rue. Took them about 2 business days from Texas to Kansas. Great service. Maybe they do it for everyone but they threw some goodies in the box... a "tactical" beer entry tool, some meat rub for smoking/grilling and some cool bumper stickers I'm sure most of us have seen. Great service from them and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for gear.

On another note... my TA33R-H should be here in a day or two, but after seeing that Trijicon redid/updated their site in the last few days (if not today), I found they now have a TA33-11, which has a crosshair reticle with BDC - which is what I really wanted but didn't think they made. Not too happy about that timing, but maybe I'll fall in love with the red horseshoe. I'm toying with the idea of not opening the ACOG when it gets here and contacting the guys I ordered it from to see if a switch would be possible, but I don't think anyone is stocking the crosshair model yet. Anyone mess around with this (supposedly new) model ever or see it at any SHOT shows or anything?

I had that crosshair reticle in a TA01-NSN, and I think I personnaly prefer the chevron in my current TA33 since it is a better CQB reticle, but in a non-typical CQB scope, making it a good all around reticle in a good all around scope.

I have the TA33G-H and really like the scope. It's fast on short range drills and can be accurate if you take the time with aim. The reticle design is well thought out.
I have a question for those that have tried both TA11 and TA33. Is the extra mag and eye relief on the TA11 worth the larger size and weight? If anyone has a positive experience, I may purchase a TA11 for my next scope. Sorry to hijack this thread, but it's a similar topic...

Don't have the experience with the TA11, but (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone) but I don't think you can have rear back up sights mounted on your flat top and still have the TA11 mounted due to eye relief. May not be a factor for you, but that's one of the things I liked about the TA33.

The listed eye relief on the TA33 is less than the TA11, but the TA33 is very forgiving. It is almost like a red dot and I can see the reticle with my head as far back as I can. Personally, the TA33 is my favorite ACOG. I have tried all three and they all have their plusses and minuses. The TA11 is the heaviest and has the most eye relief. The TA31 has the most magnification, but shortest eye relief and it isn't as forgiving as the TA33. Plus I experienced a POI shift with the TA31 when using the BAC concept. I think it may have something to do with the large field of view. The TA33 is the lightest, cheapest, and works the best for me in CQB with the BAC concept. I couldn't tell that much of a difference in magnification between the three.

That answers it quite nicely - I won't have to buy a TA11 to figure it out myself. My gut told me the TA33 is as good as it gets, but now my curiosity is cured. Thanks for the advice bro.

Went to the range and sighted in the TA33 tonight. Our police range is 50 yards max so I went to a private indoor 100 yard range for zero. First impressions...great optic. Have used ACOGs before but not this model. After getting near bullseye (orange 100 yard targets with 1 inch grids) at 25, I elected to cover the fiber optics at 100 to help get it zeroed in. The illumination really was a bit much with the lights right over you. After tapping on the caps - after each adjustment - I was able to get it zeroed at 100 yards (yes, I know BDC is for meters) with groups at about MOA. The 2 MOA dot seems to cover quite a bit at 100, but does the trick. The horseshoe around the dot is awesome for CQB and I'm pretty pumped about the whole setup. I'll be going to our LEO range for some fast action drills and qualifying next week. I learned tonight that the bottom part of the illuminated line (top of the BDC line) is dead balls on at 25 yards, whereas the POI is about 2 inches low when the dot is placed dead center. Either way, great optic, and I'm impressed so far.

If you really focus, you can see a tiny little fuzz. But you won't notice it unless you really look for the FSB. It is a non-issue.

It's a non factor. A tiny blur in the bottom of your field of view - if that. And you can forget about co-witnessing.

How do you like the Grip Pod? I thought about it but it looked like it would add about twice the weight of the Tangodown. Adding the accuracy of a small, portable bipod would be pretty nice though.

I have the Grip Pod LE and it weighs pretty much the same as a Tangodown VFG. It is best if you hold it with the thumb over hold that is very popular nowadays. Just place the Grip Pod wherever you place the VFG.

I'll look into the Grip Pod LE. Did a little research and it doesn't look too big or too heavy. I like the idea of being able to bounce out of your squad and post up on the hood of your car with something like that for some more precision. Thanks again, paulosantos. What kind of rounds are you running through your 15T? We're using Federal TRU (tactical rifle urban) SP's in 55gr. I was thinking of switching our setup (I'm pretty much in charge of our ordinance/ammo selection in our small dept.) to a ballistic tip or something with a little more accuracy. We have about 10 HUGE schools in our jurisdiction and accuracy/precision is vital for most realistic engagements. This is one reason for the switch to the ACOG for a patrol rifle sight.
