Actual experiences with a 1:9 twist for a .22LR

I've been thinking about a 1:9 twist barrel for a 10/22 -- obviously with 60-grain subsonics in mind.

Someone mentioned that twist rate being optimized only for that load, and that being a negative.

From those of you who've used a 1:9, would you recommend it? Does it still do well with 36-40 grain high-velocity loads? And does it shoot the Aguila SSS accurately?

Thanks.

Looked at it long and hard. Was about to buy a 1 in 9 10-22 barrel then tried the 60 grains thru my Marlin 80. WOW! Same hole at 30 yards. I shoot can lids all day with the 60s and the neighbors never know. Deadly head shots on large targets. Just bought a Marlin 925 scoping it with a Hawke illuminated dot. All togeher less than the 1 in 9 barrel for the 10-22.

R788, to me it's an expense just to shoot one variety of bullets with all the rest being a crap shoot. On the other hand it's a crap shoot shooting the 60's out of a 1-16. I've shot the 60's out of 5 different rifles, all shot well to 30 yards but not much further without keyholing. Some of the guns had cycling issues.

60's are shooting great out of a stock 10/22 for me. Great critter gun arround the property. deadly to 50yards with red dot. Its amazing how devastating this round is on coons and skunks

Nice groups at 100 and LOTS of drop!

As I looked arround the property with pest control in mind I doubt I would ever take a shot beyond 25 yards at pests or critters. The 60s shoot one hole groups at that distance.

The 60's seem to shoot better out of my 10/22 also, with just an FTF every now and then. I still see them keyholeing at and beyond 50yds. They do hit coons hard!

Now my TC Benchmark semi is basically a single shot with this round. I usually just use CCI subs or Eley with it and head shoot the striped oversized rats.

you can always try the 1:9 and if you end up not liking it, it should sell quick in the for sell section over at one of those rimfire sites and get close to what you paid for it.

I had a Centurion 1:9 10/22 barrel on one of my guns for a while. It shot good with everything from the SSS(when I got 3 consistent rounds) and regular 40gr stuff. I eventually sold the barrel and all my ammo cause I went a different direction with that gun.
