Hunting & Fishing Adding a scope to a shotgun

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the Berretta Xplor A400. I'm mainly going to use this for sporting clays but will from time to time use it for hunting.

Anyone think this is a bad purchase for that mission or is the Extrema 2 a better option...or something else ?

One thing that is concerning me about the A400 is it doesn't have any rails or options to attach a scope. Is there a way I can securely attach a scope, or other aiming device, to a semi-auto shotgun without having to drill the action ?

Thx

Re: Adding a scope to a shotgun

I'd look at the Benelli M2 you can get a rail mounted to that. What sort of hunting, are you going to be using a slug barrel for deer, if not you probably won't need a scope ? An M2 would double up as a nice 3-gun shotgun.

BTW I caught you on another post and noticed that you just moved to NYC, I am curious to find out how long it took you to get your pistol and rifle permits in the city. I know someone who might be moving to the city from Europe and want to give them an idea of how long it takes and what the requirements are.

Thanks.

Re: Adding a scope to a shotgun

Thanks, will take a look at the m2.

I'm still waiting for my permits to come through but spoke to them the other day and they are just waiting on my prints to come back. They are ready to issue both subject to that and its been 5 wks so far for both. NYPD are holding my rifle pending the issuance of the permit.

If your friend is American or coming with a green card the process if fairly simple. If not, it gets a little more complicated.

Re: Adding a scope to a shotgun

The M2 is definitely one of the go to shotguns for 3-gunning. What sort of hunting are u planning to do with the shotgun, bird or big game?

Thanks he's coming on a work visa, how complicated is it, do you know?

Re: Adding a scope to a shotgun

Bird not big game.

It isn't complicated but there are docs he will need to bring with him that are easier to get when in europe than once you are here esp if he has a firearms licence at the moment. Happy to help him through the process.

Re: Adding a scope to a shotgun

Thanks for that, he's likely to be coming out later in the year or early next.

Looks like we've spoken before via email regarding New Holland having put two and two together. Likely see you out there once you get everything squared away.

Re: Adding a scope to a shotgun

If you're going to use a shotgun for hunting, get one that's intended for such. The Rem 870 Express 12ga Combo gun is both relatively inexpensive, and definitely up to the task.

The combo feature gives you a second barrel with Rem Choke capability so it doubles as a loaner bird gun. The 870 has the Weaver saddle scope mount available, and it works fine.

I also used a drill press and a set of taps to convert one for use as a mount on my Charles Daly 20ga Semi, so maybe something similar could be put together for your XPlor. The remanufactured drill press and inexpensive tap/die set cost me under $75 all together at one of those travelling tent tool shows.

Including trimming down, dressing down the cut, and painting, the whole mount conversion job took about an hour.

The addition of a dot scope makes a shotgun especially versatile.

The Combo comes with a longer bird length barrel with Rem Choke, the slug barrel is smoothbore with a mild choke and rifle sights, pretty ideal for rifles slugs. Acceptably decent rifled barrels can be obtained from Hastings.
