Ok, so what is the best way to tune an adjustable gas block? My goal is best possible precision/accuracy. Do you go by least gas possible that locks the bolt back on the last round, or do you go by brass ejection pattern?

I use the SLR adjustable block. It has detents, so its easy to keep track of clicks. I usually set it at 2 clicks above minimum to lock bolt back on empty mag. Just in case you get an underpowered load or have been shooting for a little bit and the action is dirty.

The amount of gas won’t change precisionnor accuracy except in felt recoil and follow through. The goal is least amount of gas possible to operate reliably. I adjust till the bolt locks back on an empty chamber then give it 2 more clicks to account for fouling. I’ve never seen any change in accuracy or precision when tuning gas. But that’s just me.

I'd be curious if it does change practical accuracy simply for the fact that that adjusting the gas block changes velocity.

Yeah, me too. I use superlative arms gas blocks, so you have the option of restricting gas or bleeding excess gas out the front. I'm going to try both ways.

For me, I adjust until 100% consistent lock back, then one more click open for dirty / poor conditions.

As for accuracy, you really "want" everything to go back to the same position consistently. So the less jarring, the better IMO.

As for changing the velocity via a Adj. GB, I'd bet , a average 20 rd box of ammo has a higher ES then any adj. GB could alter velocity.

If a Adj. GB could alter velocities by much.. we would hear about it frequently.

One of the guys on another site, experimented with no gas port ( blocked ) v. normal gas port, on an AR... the difference was not statistically important.

I was tuning an AR and the group size changed as I adjusted the gas. Went from ~3” at 50 to ~2” at 100 yards. This was with a pencil barrel.

I have noticed this with thicker barrels but not as extreme of a change. But gas adjustment definitely can affect accuracy.

I normally screw the adjustment in then back it out a 1/2 turn at a time until it locks back.

I use Wojeck Weaponry gas blocks. They are not meant for constantly making adjustments. You set your gas and lock it in place.

Agreed. I've adjusted gas mid chrono session on multiple occasions. Never saw anything outside the ES spread or average velocity I was getting prior to tuning the GB.

This. Current have 2 on a Valkyrie and 308. Both of mine are superlative. I tune mine off of suppressor use and see if they will operate still with the can off and adjust accordingly.
