the a1 style upper does not seem to be popular. is there and advantage or a disadvantage to this style?

the obvious to me is it puts the scope up higher. seems like that would keep the front sight below the line of sight. is the carry handle a solid place to mount a quality scope?

i wont be storming into any alqueda palaces, just punching holes in paper or killing cans.

Re: advantage/disadvantage of a a1 upper?

If you are not going to be trying to hold on to your rifle through the mountains of some far off place, or down through some swamps, I guess I would ask why you would want to trade the space on top of your upper and the opportunity to have your optic closer to the bore for a handle you won't use?

Re: advantage/disadvantage of a a1 upper?

I used to have a M4gery for duty use. I've since morphed it to an A1 upper with a pencil barrel and turned it into a super lightweight survival rifle.

I don't ever intend to mount an optic on it anymore. Strictly open sights. Set it once and forget it. That's a big reason I went with the A1 upper, no chance to mess with adjustments in a case or handling.

Yes the A1 makes a great no frills bare bones hard work rifle. Nothing to turn on, off, twist, turn or adjust. Grab and go.
I have one. Its weight and ease of movement is awesome.
All my others are flat tops with optics of one type or another. They all weigh more as well.

The A1 will always have a solid place in the lineup.
