I'm going to move into the long action world with a 300 PRC build, and had a couple of questions for you guys.

On my short action builds, I have standardized on lighter weight builds (Manners stocks, Proof CF barrels in Savage small shank with barrel nut).

For this 300 PRC build, is there any reason to change that up? I don't have a lot of experience with the heavier, ELR calibers, so don't know if I'd be asking for trouble with a lighter weight build, or using a barrel nut as opposed to a shouldered barrel. Anyone making headspace guages for 300 PRC yet?

Thanks, and any other advice appreciated!

375ruger go gage and no go is what you’ll want.
I’m running a barrel nut McGowen on my 338/375 ruger and a manners T2

More weight=less felt recoil. You start shooting a magnum+, your gonna feel in within 5 shots. If it’s a hunting rig, then sure, lighter is better.
If it’s a comp gun, I’d go heavier so your shoulder can handle more than 15-20 shots a day

Like ELR said, a good brake makes all the difference. I’m also looking into a 300 PRC build. However, I shoot the Hornday .30 cal 220 grains out of my 300WM now, granted a bit slower than the PRC. I recently put a 5 port brake on it and wow.... what a difference. I chose a brake from a guy in Idaho, muzzlebrakesandmore.com I believe. Pictured attached. I can put 40-50 rounds down range and never get sore/fatigued and I weigh 130lbs. Reasonably priced, too. $115 shipped and cerakoted.

Whoops, thought I’d responded to this. If we’re talking virgin brass, perhaps. But I’d pick up a few boxes of the Hornday stock loads and go from there. I’ve found the ammo and dies on GunBroker when I search.

I don't know if this helps but the below is what I am considering for my 300 PRC build:
Defiance deviant tactical LA 30 MOA rail, heavy tang.
    Badger bottom metal, w/detachable mag.
    Bartlein 29 MTU contour 1-9 twist 5 grove 5R.
    Manners T4A elite stock
    Fat b brake
    Trigger tech diamond trigger
