Advice on my first rifle

Hi guys- I'm new to the forum and the sport and am looking for some advice. I only have about $1,000 to work with and a 4.5-14 leupold Mark 4. Obviously I can't get the most ideal rifle out there yet but I'd like to get the best I can. I currently have a remington 700 .22-250 with an hs precision varmint type stock. I'm thinking of just getting this rebarreled to a .308 or maybe selling it for a Remington 700 Police. What do you guys think is my best bet, or am I heading in the wrong direction already? Thanks

Re: Advice on my first rifle

If you are tired of the .22-250, then I would say rebarrel it, since you already have a decent stock to work with. The alternative option is to get a Remy SPS 700 in 308 and then swap the stock with your .22-250. That way you have a decent 308 with a good stock to refine your fundamentals. Just a thought.

Re: Advice on my first rifle

desert hk is right on. if you want to keep the 22-250 i would start off with a remington police or even a 5r in 308. if you want something begger i would go to a sendero and that should still meet your 1000 dollar mark

Re: Advice on my first rifle

As soon as I recover from buying the boys and the wife their firearms for Xmas- this one's gonna be mine- provided I can even get my hands on one:

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/71098

Accutrigger (natch), and comes out of the box with an H-S precision stock. I haven't seen any in stock anywhere tho- but I don't see how this rifle can be beat for the price.

Re: Advice on my first rifle

Couple things I forgot to mention/ask:
1.) I do reload
2.) If I get an aftermarket barrel who makes a good one for the money?
3.) I hear nothing but great things about savages and am sure they go toe to toe with remington (many people say even better) as far accuracy, but I can't bring myself to buy one. As dumb as it sounds, I cant stand the safeties- they look like a piece of sheet metal that someone bent over with a pair of pliers). Its a dumb reason to not buy a gun- I'm aware, but somehow it just ruins an otherwise perfect rifle for me. Sorry if I offended any savage fans- just giving my opinion since they were mentioned as a possibility.
4.) I also heard good things about the cheaper FN sniper rifles too. Basically a winchester tho?

Re: Advice on my first rifle

I'll give you my .02.
You have a decent stock already, you have decent glass already. Hell, you have a decent rifle, although a barrel burner with too slow of a twist.
If you are not in a big hurry, send the barreled action to Hart and have them true the action and install a .308 1-10 twist barrel on it.
This will set you back about 700 bucks.
Less than a new 700P and a far better shooting stick to boot.
There are also several hide sponsors that do excellent work and the cost would be in the same ball park.
Roscoe out of La., Mark at short action customs in Ohio and Robert at rwsgunsmithing.
Any of the known companies selling match grade barrels are good to go.

Re: Advice on my first rifle

I would keep the Rem, Buy a Savage to go with it and then you have two guns, not just one! Two guns are better than one any day.

FYI, that piece of sheet metal is the bolt release, not the safety.

also, Savage rifles have three position safeties which are better than two position IMHO for field use (IE. tactical and hunting)

+1 on the rebarrel if you want to mod the REm 700 though!

I agree. One of the Xmas gifts I mentioned above is a Savage 11 for my 13 year old in .308- first Savage we've owned. I'm impressed with the design of the three-position safety.

Re: Advice on my first rifle

If I were starting from scratch the Savage would be the ticket it seems. They have some nice models that probably would need little if any modification I would imagine. Because I already have a remington that is apparently just a good barrel away from being a nice setup, I think I'm just going to take it the rest of the way and save the Savage for a little later down the road. Now the question is do I send the gun to hart, Krieger, etc. or have my gunsmith take care of everything. I am curious about the process of rebarreling but I think I'll start a new post on that...

Re: Advice on my first rifle

I've been exactly where you're at, and I'll share my thoughts.

Just for the record I am a fan of, and own Rem 700 platforms with custom barrels and smith work done, and love 'em.

But, in my experience, in general, the Savages come out of the box more accurate than lets say a comparably priced Remmy.

If you rebarrel as suggested above, you will have a really nice set up, kind of a semi-custom if you will. It should be a tack driver, and a rifle anyone would be proud to own. But, you'll still be at one rifle.

On the other hand... You can take that same money that you were going to spend on barrel, smithing, freight, etc.. plus all the wait time, and just go buy a nice Savage with either accu-stock or HS stock, and, also as suggested above it will be sub-moa all day. Then, you still have a varmint rifle and your new rifle. Just sayin...

I saw that you reload so I recommend getting one of rsilvers 260 Rem barrels for your Rem 700.I sold my 308's long ago except the family heirloom.Why?...They blow in the wind nearly twice what some other chamberings do.
