Hi all,

I'm looking to get a semi in .308 and have narrowed it down to three choices that seem to fit my needs and budget: a POF-308, a GAP AR-10, and the Noveske N6. (20" barrel)

From my research (yes, including google and searching this forum) it seems like you can hardly go wrong with any of these builds, but I was hoping to get some input from the forum members with actual time behind any of these rifles. Pros and cons, accuracy, ease of use, felt recoil, reliability, etc, as well as what options, where available are worth it.

Thanks for your time, I have learned a ton just reading through the FAQs and the online training, this is probably the best marksmanship forum (long range or not) I've come across.

Re: Advice on semi-auto for newcomer

I can't speak to the virtues of the Noveske other than what I have read, but as for the GAP and POF rifles:

It is impossible to go wrong with anything that George and crew make, including their Precision AR-10 rifles. If you want a custom rifle that will be as accurate as a semi-auto rifle can get, then the GAP is the way to go. Also, GAP will build on the DPMS/KAC platform or the Armalite platform. (I'd personally go with the DPMS). The only problem with the GAP that I can think of is the wait time. Last I heard, GAP was still having trouble getting components for their AR-10 builds. I think that George posted a month or so ago that things were getting better, but you'll likely need to call and find out what kind of lead time you are looking at. You other option is to buy a used one...they come up for sale here on the board from time to time.

As to the POF...I love my 20" rifle. It is sub-MOA capable with quality match ammo and my reloads, has been 100% reliable, is a piston rather than a DI gas system, and uses extremely high-quality components like the Rock 5R barrel, Gieselle trigger, etc., etc.

You really can't go wrong with the options you have selected!!

Re: Advice on semi-auto for newcomer

Thanks for the input so far, and to some of the questions:

I plan on using it primarily for fun and skill building, and perhaps some competition waaaaay down the road. I have a few bolt guns, mainly used for hunting, one of which is an older M77 in 7 Rem Mag which I have dropped a Timney trigger into and is a nice shooter. When I develop enough to push the limits of the accuracy of this rifle I am definitely considering something more along the lines of a custom (bolt) precision set-up. As it sits now I have enough calibers in bolt guns to keep me happy and a KAC SR-15 which is a terrific 5.56 semi; so in some ways I'm trying to fill in a gap.

It looks like pretty much everyone has a wait time, except for perhaps POF, which is one reason I'm starting the process now. The wait for a good product really isn't a problem for me, I don't expect the world to end until 2012 anyway.

Do the POF .308 uppers come with forward assists?
