AE and AW AI Barrels are they the same??

Re: AE and AW AI Barrels are they the same??

AE barrels are marked .308 whilst AW are 7.62 x 51 NATO. At least this side of the water.

Is there a difference??...probably not.

Both have same thread tenon.

They have the same thread pattern. Biggest difference is the extractor groove cut in the AW barrel allows it to go to the AW and AE, the AE barrels do not have this feature and thus cannot go on the AW.

Hi Deadly0311
AW & AE Barrels are not the same.
The AW does not have an extractor groove, earlier barrels had a snow groove on the breech face of the barrel & later ones do not.
The thread of both barrels is the same & the barrel spigot length is also the same.
The only difference is the AE barrel has a plain location diameter for the front recoil lug.
Yes an AW barrel will fit in an AE but is not recommended as this location face will not be present & the recoil lug will be tightened onto the threads of the barrel when the action is torqued into position.
People will argue this makes no difference but if that is the case why would it be designed this way.

Re: AE and AW AI Barrels are they the same??

That actually makes sense. It seems then that the threads on the AW barrel would then have damaged threads and them may no longer be usable on a AW again??
