What are you giving up other then the obvious magazine difference? With the new mk2 using the aics mags its not such a big thing.I understand the AW was military purpose built and the AE more LE oriented. So I guess what are the tangible advantages to the AW?

Re: AE vs AW

The main thing youre giving up is the ability to spend over $2000 on something else! My AE will shoot lights out against anything out there and I can do a pretty quick mag change, so the 10 rd mag vs $2000+ in my pocket wasnt even a close win.

Damn Sniper that's a bold statement!

Re: AE vs AW

IMO, the main advantage of the AW is the ability to change barrels easily yourself. You can use the AW to shoot some pretty capable bullets, like the 115DTAC. I have a KMW-built rifle with a Surgeon action with an integral recoil lug like the AW, and switch barrels myself to shoot 308Win, 243Win/DTAC, 6XC/DTAC and 260AI. You could do the same thing with the AW, but not the AE as easily.

This is what I'm trying to determin could you elaborate more on your statement?

Re: AE vs AW

Ummmmm - Ok. Went through this myself.

In practical terms I can see no real advantage of an AW to an AE for a normal non military end user. Both change barrels quick - although the AW is a little quicker. There are the magazine differences but no one is shooting back at me so it is a moot point, which has been addressed with the AEMk2 anyway.

I have a friend with an AW in 308, I have an AE in 308, we both shoot F/TR, there is no difference in the accuracy of the rifles, only the drivers.

There is a certain amount of ownership satisfaction of AW versus AE but no amount of reasoned argument can overcome desire or emotion. Mine does all that I ask of it & then some. I like it so much I have ordered an AEMk2 as well.

Re: AE vs AW

If you fire factory match ammo, this doesn't make much difference, but it might if you like to handload. The AE mags lack the small composite insert at the front of the inside of the mag, which gives a couple extra millimeters to work with in seating depth and still have your ammo feed from the mag. For me, the biggest deciding difference was about $2000 to spend on ammo! (A wise man once said, "don't spend so much money on shootin' gear, spend it on improving the f&*kin' shooter").

I will also say that the two-stage on my AE, which is right at about 3.5lbs is great...smooth take up and clean break. I don't know if I'd want it lighter. I think it would tough to go "wrong", but with my AE (since I pretty much knew I was going to stick w/ 308), I can say that I haven't come up on one time yet that I wished I hadn't picked the AE...and I'm still working on using up the 1500 rounds of BH match I purchased with the extra $.

Re: AE vs AW

The AW is overbuilt for most users. Not a bad thing at all, just means the biggest feature the AW has that the AE is wasted money for most of us.

When people state the AE is "less robust" it sort of leaves theimpression it's not a durable rifle. Which is not the case... It's still a bit overbuilt compared to the custom 700 action rifles out there.

Re: AE vs AW

Just one more opinion, but I would say the AE is more "robust" than the Remi 700. I have zero worries about its durability even if the AI purists would say I got the "runt."
