AI 10-rd mag cut down to five?

I have a Remington 700 LTR chambered in .223. These rifles do not come with a detachable magazine, so I installed Badger Ordnance bottom metal with an AI detachable magazine.

For the .223, the AI mags come in only 10-rnd size.

I use this rifle with a sling, and also shoot offhand a lot (no sling).

The magazine is too long--it is hard to keep the sling from touching it, which affects accuracy. Also, in offhand position, I am forced to hold the rifle by the mag alone (otherwise hand is too far forward and I lose point of balance). This obviously is not stable, and accuracy also suffers.

Has anyone had any experience with cutting down one of these mags so it is say half the original length?

I only need it to hold five rounds.

Thanks for any suggestions

PM sent to GE. Thanks for any further ideas.

I don't suppose there is another brand of magazine that will fit the Badger bottom metal (which is really made for an AI).
