AI/AE MK II or AW,..NF or S&B...Combo questions ??

Sooo fellas here is the deal. I have the coin for the project. BUT! I dont want to buy things just because I have the $$$. I am not usually this indecisive but now I am asking for help. So here is the question:

Do I go AI AE MK II or AI AW (both in .308)

and 20" or 24" I have one of each and I prefer my 24" for targets past 800m. Sooo Im also stuck on the length.

Schmidt and Bender 3-12 x 50
Night Force 3.5-15 x 50
Or even maybe a U.S. Optics 3.5-17x

Bottom line is I am willing to pay for a stick and glass around 6,0000-8,000 for both. *but just to re-iterate I am not going to spend it all just cause I have it all, i.e. im sorta frugal!!

I am not going to be going to the artic tundra nor will I ever go back to the sandbox again...BUT! I am sorta rough on things and dont like to put things on shelves and stare at them. It will be used...This isnt my first rig. I am interested in long range plinking out to about 1,000m. I am not interested in any other types of rifle. But I am up for any other ideas on glass. This would be a complete new addition to the family.

I am just having problems "popping" on this. I have been in this game for a few years now, so I have a hard time understanding how $1,000-$3,000 more in similar kit will really do for me? I dont need to impress any girls...im taken, and as for guys, I tried the gay thing once and I didnt like it...(Just Kidding)

If I had the money I'd go AIAW and a Nightforce F1 3.5-15X50. While the S&B is a little nicer glass I can't justify the price different IMO. I'd rather have the extra grand for ammo or other accessories. I guess it really depends what you feel your wants and needs are. If you want a more compact rifle I'd get the AE with folding stock. But if length and weight isnt a concern I'd take the AW. Either way your a lucky man.

Many, many more will jump into this - I am sure, ...but, I just went through this myself in the past month.

I ended up with an AE Mk II 24" with a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 zs, so anything else I would have to say would be completely biased by my own large purchase, but that is where I ended up. I am very happy with my 2 trips to the range so far.

Aw w/ 20inch barrel, folder, and muzzle break is 6600$ alone, so Id go AIAE for half the price. Just my .02

on optics, everyones eyes are different, I personally prefer S&B glass wise out of all of them with NF as a second and USO as a close third to the NF.
Now if your looking for the most bombproof scope IMHO USO is the way to go...
Since Im not going to Iraq and also cant justify the 3k for a scope at the moment, I went w/ nightforce, and i dont regret my decision one bit...

If it were me....for many reasons....I'd go AIAE w/ 20" barrel and the S&B 4-16x50. Actually, I'd go Hensoldt, but that's a bit more than your other options.

The AIAE 2.0 is a great value for the money and IMHO there is not a $2k+ difference to the AW though I don't have a ton of experience with the AW. I don't really think though that the differences would matter to you based on your questions. Take the extra money and buy some better glass, you'll notice that difference more than the AE/AW differences.

Unless you've looked through the F1 then I'd hesitate to recommend it, the reticle is too small for my liking at low powers. The S&B 4-16x50 for around $2500-$2700 is a good value and a scope that will let you reach out to where you want to be.

Well brother, I don't have the cash to get the "top of the line" just because. So I have to be selective. I sold a car and have been saving for a couple months to get the package I want.

I looked and looked and I just can't really see what requirements a AW would fill that an AE MkII would not.

Maybe someone can help us both. I am about to the point of calling Stacey at AINA to ask him.

As to the barrel length, I wanted to keep it as compact as possible while still being able to get to 1000 yards with factory ammo. Based on what I have see with our department LTR's I don't have a problem going with the 20" barrel. The reduced length when folded will be nice as well.

I have a USO SN-3 on my current work rifle. I would not hesitate to go that route again if it wasn't for just wanting to try the Nightforce F1 or one of the Hensoldts. If I had the coin for the S&B I would probably go that way.

I have an AI .338 with S&B 5-25 X 56.

Also have a Iron Brigade M40 replica with 3.5 (I think) - 15X50 optic.

I find the S&B to be a lot clearer optically, but perhaps the difference in scope spec re power etc may be the difference. Nontheless I am plotting how to get a 5-25X56 S&B on my M40.

Initially in my elation over the AI AW .338 I though I just HAD to have one in .308 and probably rebarrel to .260.

Now I think I would be quite satisfied with an acis stock on my present rifle, and the S&B optic. Though I would find it hard to rebarrel my Iron Brigade .308 to .260.

If you are going to be shooting unsuppressed with a factory AI barrel, I would highly recommend 24" for .308

In addition, I would go AE over AW for the price and your best bet for an optic is a NF second focal plane 3.5-15x50 which I feel is the absolute best optic you can get for the value.

An AE Mk2 with a NF would cost you a little over 5 grand which would leave you with plenty of cash for ammo/components/training and is more than enough bolt gun for anything you would use it for.

Definitely AE over the AW. If you are not using it as an "operator" there is no reason to spend the extra coin. The NF will be the cheapest scope of the bunch and it is more than capable.

+1 for calling Stacey he'll be able to answer any question you have and some you didn't know you had. Stacey is a wealth of information about all things AI.

I had talked to him last June or July when I was initially planning on getting one of the AI offerings. If I remember correctly I believe that the MK II hadn't come out. At that time Stacey told me the only option you couldn't get on the AE was the butt spike. I know the you also aren't able to get the quick change barrel or the bonded action with the AE. If you prefer a 24" barrel then go that route as far as glass I don't have experience with either so I am no help there.

Having been a GAP whore and the owner of many custom sticks-I just recently added a new AE MKII 24" non folder. I am absolutely blown away by the accuracy. 2 inch groups at 300 yards with my "go to" 175SMK load has exceeded all my expectations. I have an S&B PMII 5x25 with a GenII on the AE and a 5x25 PMII with a P4F on the AWSM.

I have an AW in 338LM-but decided to try the AE for the 308 and soon to be 243. All I can say is buy with confidence.Deal with Jonathan at SRT. YOU WILL be pleased.

I sucked up as much AI info as I could get from him while I was at Sniperweek this year. That is what planted the AI bug. That and seeing the number of AI's competing there. I have seen quite a few custom rigs go down at matches. I have not seen an AI fail at a match yet. I know all things mechanical fail, it's just the AI's are closer to my intended use than a tight custom rig. It appeals to me that they were designed specifically for what I intend to use it for.

I am almost there.

I had the same dilemma earlier this summer. I appreciate the offering between the AW and AE but couldn't justify the difference in price simply for range work & competition so went with the AE in 24" (not surpressed). The saving allowed me to add a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 mounted on the AI 30mmm/18 MOA as recommended by Stacey. I'm happy with the Nightforce and Ken round there was super in helping me through the decision process.

No doubt the AW is great but for my needs the AE is more than sufficient and leaves me room to step up to the .300 or .338 later this year.

I mulled over a similar set of choices a few years ago and went with the AIAW + S&BPMII 4-16x mil/P4. Here's what I'd do if I could do it again:

Rifle - I'd opt for the AE MKII. While I certainly don't "regret" buying the AIAW, the AE MKII would be just as accurate (I'm sure), plenty robust and will accommodate the 10rnd AICS mags. When I bought my AIAW, the regular AE was the only option available. I wanted to have 10rnd mag capacity b/c I thought being limited to 5rnds might be a disadvantage in comps. No worries now with the MKII. I'd have to say the over riding factor in my decision is that deep down, I'd always still want the AIAW (difficult to rationalize) so I bought it.

Scope - I wouldn't change a thing. You'll find many opinions and a big cheering section for all the big name scopes here on The Hide. The S&B is my scope of choice, no regrets at all, would do it again over and over. I own and like NF and USO scopes as well, but for clarity of glass, reliability etc S&B comes out on top for me.

IMHO, if you've got the cash for the AIAW, get the AE MKII and spend the difference on ammo and some quality instruction (ie: PR 1&2 at Rifles Only).

I would recommend a higher powered optic. A 4-16 or 5-25x S&B would be my choice with the preference to the 5-25. Excellent scope. It's what sits on my match rifles.

As for the rifle, if you are dropping the coin then might as well get the AW.

You don't need an AW. The question is whether or not you need the longer mag length of the MKI AE over the MK II.

The NF will do and there's no need to have more, but a 4-16 SB would be my choice.

Barrel length is not a big deal on a .308. I like the better balance, feel, and the ease of shooting a slightly longer barrel. But I also like the portability of the shorter one.

Get the folding stock if you want to get the bolt out without removing the cheeck piece.

Instead of rebarreling and restocking the Iron Brigade, buy a MkII in .260 - you'd be looking at about $1500 or so extra, and have two rifles instead of one.

Okay, some info here that definitely needs to be corrected. AINA is now offering the buttspike as an option on MkIIs, so going forward they can definitely be ordered with the spike. They <span style="font-weight: bold">CANNOT</span> be ordered with a Quick-Adjust cheekpiece and buttpad system, nor can they technically be ordered with the Target Adjustable Buttpad (But you can order one as an accessory, and swap it out for yourself using an allen wrench).

The ability to change remove barrels is no different from the AW to the AE; they attach in the same way and are extremely similar, although you can't put an AE barrel into an AW due to the length of the threading. There's nothing "given up" by the AE in this regard.

As far as the bonded action goes, only the AW (and soon the AX rifles) claim this feature. The AE actions are attached to the chassis via the action screws, which enable the receiver to be removed from the chassis for cleaning or maintenance - on the AWs, your receiver and chassis are effectively-speaking attached together permanently (barring sending it back to the factory). The MkII rifles can have the trigger group removed from the rifle without detaching the chassis, whereas the MkIs require that you pull the receiver out from the chassis before you can remove the trigger group.

To answer Rob01, I own other rifles, and when I recently shot an AI AE with a 1.5 stock with another Law Enforcement Agency I was very impressed with its quality and accuracy. I have a Stiller Tac 30 and a Rem 700 and I can subjectively say that the action was much much smoother.

I have personally developed a small upper cut on the the 700, but I deal with it. When operating the AI, I had to double check that I rechambered a round.

So just like some dudes love them some fat chicks, I fell in love with that heavy s.o.b that day

I am running an AE MkII with a PRH and have neither need nor desire for an AW any more.

Both rifles will suit you. I went with the AW because I like to own the absolute best, and didn't want to be regretting my decision, selling the AE at a loss, and buying an AW anyway.

I don't regret my choice. That being said, if I were not "that kind of person" the AE most certainly would perform just as well for my use.

I bought an M3 rather than a 330ci for the same reason.

As for the glass- I went with Schmidt and Bender. Had a 4-16 and now have a 5-25, because I like magnification. I have a friend with a NF, and it is a really great scope. That being said, I can notice a difference in clarity. At that point, your money IS buying something- clearer glass, and I haven't read a thing about S&B compromising in the "ruggedness" category. So I recommend spending the extra here.

Keep in mind I have very little experience compared to a lot of the guys here, but I have done quite a bit of similar research to you, prior to making my decision.

If I am Hijacking just disregard and I will start a new thread. I am feeling as though I am in the same boat except I am debating the AI/AE markII 2.0 versus the Badger M2008 in an AICS 2.0. Since the AW is out of my price range. The barrel and small parts TBD. I already have a Remington action set into a 2.0 and really like the feel. I definitely want to be able to switch barrel to go from .308win to .260rem I am guessing cost would be pretty close. Like I said if I am to far off let me know and I will start a new thread

When yall refer to clarity being greater on the S&B. What would yall scale that at on a 1 to 10 ? EX: Leuopold (which is pretty awesome) is a 5 and a NF is a 7...

I know this is subjective in its reasoning...but then again arent all these?

Since you mentioned that you'll be shooting out to 1,000 meters, I'll "third" the recommendation of the PMII 5-25X. The additional magnification over the 3-12X and 4-16X 50s' really helps when spotting and when shooting small targets. I suggest the P4F reticle, unless you prefer the Gen 2 XR (and are lucky enough to find a PMII 5-25X Gen 2 XR at a price you are willing to pay).

Below are reticle diagrams/schematics of the S & B-designed P4 Fine and Premier Reticles-designed Gen 2 XR. <span style="font-style: italic">Looking at the drawings of the reticles themselves</span>, the Gen 2 XR subtension is pretty close, but the P4F's subtension looks thicker than in real life. I suspect that for viewability and/or cost efficiency S & B used the <span style="font-style: italic">drawing</span> of the P4 reticle for both the P4 and P4F diagrams/schematics.

AIAE MKII 2.0 .308 20" Plain barrel with a NightForce F1 on top.

Not once, have I regretted my decision. Very likely I never will.

I went through the same dilemma about 7 months ago and know your pain (a good pain to have). I know myself and knew if I got the AE Mk II, I would later regret not having the flagship AI. So I ended up getting an AI AW308 26" with the NF 3.5-15 F1 model. I shoot 1000 yard matches and wanted the extra barrel length to get the max possible velocity. I can't be happier with my decision! I sleep well at night knowing I have the best out there. If your anything like me you will regret not getting the AW.

I emailed Stacey at AINA and for what I do the only advantage of the AW over the AE MkII appears to be changing the barrels without stripping the action out. I am pretty sure I can live with having to remove the action for a barrel change.

Would I like an AW? Sure. If they were even close to the same price I would go with the AW. But there is a VAST price difference. I would rather apply that difference to a "Covert" conversion for the MkII.

I disagree with mounting the 5-25 SB on it, though, because that scope is big, heavy, and must be mounted really high. Go with the 4-16 instead: it fits the rifle better.

If you use an AI factory mount, the mount height is the same for both, though anything other than a 45moa mount needs to be machined for the larger turret housing. As far as weight, there is a 5 ounce difference between the two, but wasn't a dealbreaker for me on a rifle package that weighs almost 20 lbs.

The real benefit to me, and the main reason for buying the 5-25x56 is that it focus's down to 10m. The 4-16x50 only focus's down to 50m. I don't ever see myself shooting that close BUT I do a lot of dry fire practice at home on the floor, and being able to focus on a small sharpie mark on the wall comes in handy for me. Your mileage may vary though!

At the Terry Cross match in 2008 there was a 25 yard shot where you had to identify a small picture of your assigned target and shoot it. The 5-25 would have come in handy on that stage.

The 5-25 will mount in the same 1" height 34mm Badger rings as the 4-16 and will also fit in the .92" height Seekins, which are the lowest 34mm I know of, as long as the barrel isn't a really heavy contour.

The 5-25 weighs .3 lbs more than the 4-16, 2.3lbs vs 2lbs, and is only about 3/4 of an inch longer 16.2" vs 15.5". The advantage of the power factor far outweighs those small amount.

I have the AE mkII, 20" folder with the S&B 4-16. I absolutely love it. The P4 fine reticle is the way to go, and you still save some money vs going AW with NF

I went with a AW folder and S&B 4x16x42 P4F. I like this set up very much. Not saying its any better or worse, it just fits my needs. I prefer smaller scopes with less bulk and weight and the S&B 4x16x42 works perfectly. Some scopes are looking like professional size photo lenses. I will be upgrading my scope base in the near future to a SPUHR so I can mount additional optics for shorter distance shots. My next AI might be an AE. This seems to be the most bang for the buck.

I thought I would share my glee. I just got off the phone with Jonathan at SRT Supply and ordered my AE MkII.

I went with the 20" braked side folder in FDE.

It should be here Monday. Hopefully I will be able to get out to the range Tuesday.

Not right now.

The USO will stay on the 700 for right now.

I have a placeholder on the AR10 that I may swap over to the AE until I get the cash for a NXS F1.

Congrats on the purchase. As you know from PM, I got my 24" AE from SRT about a month ago and have been very happy with it and dealing with Jonathan.

That was my predicament. The reliability of the AI was what eventually did it for me. I am sure both would be tack drivers, but in the end I wanted a "factory" rifle that was up to match standards. Not to mention the fact that there was no wait. I ordered and it shipped the same day.

This is also what Im looking for, its not so much the bug hole groups ( I already have a Tac Ops that will do that) but the reliability of the AI platform and versatility to change calibers.
Can the AIAE stand up to a large amount of abuse?
Id love an AW but 6600$ isn't gonna happen for the rifle alone and Im not going to sell my current rig to fund it.
