I've gone down the rabbit hole on this one being stuck in the COVID Corrections Center. I've developed a dream/concept and I'm looking for input from the experts on feasibility which doesn't include potential cost. It is a good place to put the government stimulus check though. I hope this is the correct thread on the forums to post this.

1. Accuracy International rifles are the current tits!
2. The Delisle Carbine is the historic tits!
3. Making a modern day reproduction of the Delisle Carbine using the AI action re-barreled in .45ACP with a modified bolt length, the chassis modified to accept 1911 magazines, and a modified chopped chassis fore end for a 2" x 12" can with the AI BUIS would be tits!

Thoughts? (I have to wipe down my keyboard and wash my hands now)

Lol well seeing as how AI doesn’t sell just actions, you have to buy a rifle first. So cheapest would be a non folding AT probably from the PX. Then find someone to make a 1 off bottom metal, which could be Uber expensive. I think you’d run into some of the same issues that those of us who wanted an AI in a manners/foundation stock run into. Also, what about the bolt face?

Problems;
The bolt length to engage the locking lugs and bolt travel relative to the position of the magazine to chamber the round from the mag to the chamber, the barrel/chamber depth in the receiver relative to a modified bolt length that will still engage the lugs, the receiver bottom lugs that mount to the chassis (can’t be cut into without some issues), proper bolt face for .45ACP, will the extractor hold the .45 shell, and will a .45 shell properly eject from the port, just to name a few issues.

The bolt length to engage the locking lugs and bolt travel relative to the position of the magazine to chamber the round from the mag to the chamber, the barrel/chamber depth in the receiver relative to a modified bolt length that will still engage the lugs, the receiver bottom lugs that mount to the chassis (can’t be cut into without some issues), proper bolt face for .45ACP, will the extractor hold the .45 shell, and will a .45 shell properly eject from the port, just to name a few issues.

Not complicated, just ridiculous. Seriously, why? None of it makes any sense.

I knew of 2 places that were doing them. One companies didnt work. The other worked flawless, but it wasnt a true clone which isnt a biggie. He closed up shop 2 years ago I think.

What’s the significance of an AI/AI clone action? Why pick the biggest, clumsiest action made. Other than being a bolt action, it has absolutely nothing going for it with regard to your project.

I figure that because the locking lugs on a SMLE are in the rear of the receiver and extending the barrel into the chamber area I lose the use of the locking lugs on the bolt.

Just buy a freaking cheap Rem. Model 7 or 700 action, throw a 458 Socom barrel on it, and sling subsonic loads out it. Uses a standard .473” bolt face.

This talk of cutting a receiver in half is beyond stupid.

Piss buy an AIAT, unscrew the barrel, and screw on an integrally suppressed 458 Socom. DONE

Being cool in your mind only goes so far before stupid enters.

If you cut the receiver, you have to cut the bolt anyway...

Not only that, but you are effectively destroying and structurally degrading a device that that's designed to contain a ~60,000 psi explosion right by your face.

Designed that psi for center fire rifle but .45 is around 20,000 and +P is around 23,000.

Read some old content of some famous gun guy that does exactly that, cutting bolts and receivers. Frank De Haas had an article in Gun Magazine from 1989 about shortening Enfield actions and bolts.

Excerpt from his article a guy posted from another forum;

"It is a good idea to jot down the exact dimensions of the original bolt, i.e., the exact distance between the right locking lug and root of the bolt handle.

"Remove the striker and extractor from the bolt. Do not remove the extractor collar. If you plan to replace the dogleg bolt handle, that can be done next.

"Saw off the original handle and weld on a commercial one or one you have made. Chuck the bolt in the lathe with its rear end exposed. With a pointed lathe bit mounted in the tool post, scribe a line about two inches long along the left, lower part of the bolt so you will have index marks on the bolt after a section of it is removed. Beginning .750 inch ahead of the forward side of the bolt handle root and using the lathe, turn a recess in the bolt body .500-inch long and .065-inch deep. I used a cut-off bit for that task.

"After the circular recess has been turned in, use the cut-off bit or hacksaw to separate the rear part of the bolt at the front of the recess to leave a tenon on the rear part of the bolt. Do that with the front part of the bolt still in the chuck.

"To shorten the action, then turn or cut off the necessary amount from the front part of the bolt. Face off the cut end and, using a boring bit, bore the inside of the bolt deep enough to accept the tenon on the rear end of the bolt. It should be a fairly snug fit but loose enough so the rear part of the bolt can be pressed home by hand.

"All that is done with the front end of the bolt left chucked in the lathe to assure perfect alignment of the halves. If you intend to use silver solder to join the halves, make sure the joining shoulders are square.

"Now, with the bolt still in the lathe chuck, brush on some flux, insert the tenon, align the index marks, position the tail stock with a pad close to the rear of the bolt, heat the joint, apply the silver solder and force the joint together with the tail stock. Such a joint will be barely visible after the bolt is polished. I used low temperature silver solder. If you prefer to steel-weld the joint, you must turn in a bevel on each shoulder to form a 'shallow V."
