Gunsmithing AICS 1.5 with Surgeon Action

I am waiting to get my Surgeon back from Shilen and would like to put it into a 1.5. Will it drop in? Is there any problem with the bolt release being on the side? Do you have to bed these stocks?

For the Rem 700 it is as simple as a straight drop in and tighten the bolts.

I've never heard AI say this is for any other action but you may find different?

+1. You may also have to put a releif cut underneath the bolt handle in the closed position. I think it may depend on which bolt handle option you chose. I have a KMW on mine and that had to be done. Also, GAP had bed the action into the stock. Just minor mods I would say. IMO, bedding is just an assurance for best accuracy. But I don't think you have to.

I also have a AICS with a Surgeon action. The cut-out on the AICS had to be relieved for the Surgeon bolt handle; I don't recall anything being mentioned about the recoil lug opening being modified; and bedding is of questionable need for the AICS series.

You will have to relieve under the bolt handle. You should also at least bed the rear tang to keep from putting stress in that area and bending it. You will notice if you tighten the rear screw with the front screw left out it will pull the front of the action up creating stress. It should be bedded there at the very least.
