AICS 2.0 + Remington SPS a good first LR setup?

Aside from precision AR's and hunting rifles, I've never owned a dedicated LR bolt rifle. I've been doing a bit of hunting around on the web, including GAP, UGSW, etc. To be honest, I'm not quite ready to jump into $3000-$4000+ realm that such builders demand.

I can build an AR with my eyes closed, but to be honest, I really have no skill set when it comes to bedding a rifle, or any other gun smithing for such an application.

What I am considering after reading other posts is to go with the AICS 2.0 and drop an SPS barreled action (.308) into it and call it a day, for now. Perhaps in the future, I could consider buying a top tier barreled action to replace it.

Any hints/tips/suggestions? Any reason to consider another alternative?

I would suggest you looking into a McRees chassis instead of the ai. The folder model is cheaper than a non folding ai and accuracy is better.

That we be a great start and when your ready to upgrade you will already have a good action and stock to build on. That will leave just blueprinting the action and a rebarrel. Look into the aac-sps as it is already threaded and 1-10 twist.

Do you have some back up that the McRee would have better inherent accuracy than an AI?

If you like the ergonomics of the AR platforms, then you need to take a look at the XLR Evolution Chassis.

It feels very similar to an AR, is lighter than the AICS and is very well designed. It's cheaper than the AI as well.

Not a bad choice at all. I have been running a similar setup for a while now and it is serving me well. Some folks go back and forth about the feel and the ergonomics of the AICS, but I am a fan of it.

+1 for SPS/AICS.

Mine is .223, and shoots really well.

I am a big fan of the chassis.

It is worth getting behind one before you buy, they aren't for everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion on the AAC version of the Remington SPS. Any idea if this threaded barrel/end cap design effects accuracy? Or if another aftermarket flash hider or brake will effect accuracy?

He's full of shit. There's no reason other than shooter preference that a McRee would be better than a AI, unless the smith or person who dropped it in didn't know wtf they were doing. I've owned custom McRees and actual AIs. I think Scott makes a awesome stock, but ergo is better for me on the AI and I just shoot plain better with one.

I went with the 1.5 AI and the SPS. Was thinking of dropping an R5 in it, but the 5R shoots good out of the box.

The Hogue shock on the SPS is the first thing I wanted to change. Getting the bottom metal and a mag put it in the price of most stocks I was looking at in a similar configuration.

My AI 1.5 is in the mail and I will see if I made the correct choice.

Accuracy wouldnt be altered by the threaded end cap as it still retains the same crown as a standard sps tactical. Im not sure how different flash hiders or muzzle breaks would effect accuracy, although it shouldnt cause any loss.

I won't mention names but I had a flash hider that made my rifle go from 1/2-3/4moa to 1.5+ moa.

Take it off, back to normal. Re-install, back to crap.

I know the crown on my aac-sps and my dads sps tact are in fact different. My aac is straight flat where his has more of a what I have seen called a target crown. Funny thing is his shoots tighter.

Good luck. Sounds like a good start. I had to settle for a B&C but it does the trick for now.

I got an AAC and know how you know that!! That said this is what mine does when I do my part.

But I do check my thread protector before and after each outing.

I can't really attest to it's ability ranges since I have only shot it out to 100y. From everything I have read, the 175 is "better" at longer distances and the 1:10 is better for the 175gr. The 175 stays supper sonic longer than the 168's. Now I have also read pages of testamony from users who have used the 168's out to 1000y as well so you'll have to make your own call. I bounced back and forth so many times I finally just made my call and got the AAC, only time will tell if I went the right way. I have not had the oppertunity to try a 168 in my rifle yet so I cannot speak to the group it might hold with those.

Yes that is with Southwest's 175gr match. Now the only thing I have done is change out my stock for a 700p takeoff. Other than that no changes have been made to the action, barrel or trigger.

I am also looking into the AI Chasis for my 700 LTR Tactical. I like the thumbhole stocks and having a 14 1/2 LOP I like the way my hand sits on the grip. Also that by the time you go with a different stock you have to pay the extra money for the bottom meta, at least with the AI it comes ready to go. The AI stock from what research I have been able to do, every part on that rifle chasis can be replaced due to wear and tear or modified to shooter prefrence.

Well, I ended up going a different route and ordered an FN SPR A2. Comes with the McMillan A4 stock and having him put a Timney trigger in it.

Now I'm just trying to decide between 4.5-14x or 6.5-20x Mark4...decisions.
