AICS, Atlas users

I just got an Atlas with an AI spigot for my rifle. The Atlas seems well built but there is a lot of slop between the spigot mount and the mount on the rifle in the form of cant. Is this normal? The controlled cant built into the bipod feels good but this uncontrolled cant introduced by the mounting system bothers me.

Also, there seems to be a lot of fore and aft movement in the bipod that I'm not fond of. How much is normal? With the Atlas mounted correctly (lettering facing shooter), the bipod is allowed to roll slightly under the rifle. It isn't allowed to roll much past 90* if any at all in the other direction. Is that typical?

If these are typical attributes, I'm not sure the Atlas is for me.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

What spigot did you get? If the one with the tensioning knob you need to loosen it completely and then insert the bipod then tighten the thumb screw up

Snkbt,

The spigot problem might be solved now. Accushot has introduced the V2 adapter for the spigot. I just receieved mine in the mail today and plan to try it out in the near future. If you do not have one yet, send your spigot to Accushot and they will fit the V2 adapter for you for $24.95, which includes shipping. There was a thread circulating on the Hide about two weeks ago which described someone trying the V2 adapter and apprently it works good.

Snkbit if there is play the spigot may not be fully engaged. I f you have the v2 style back the knob way out and pop the spigot in and tighten until there isn't any play.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

I don't have the V2 but did find the thread just a second ago. Does the adjustable tension on the pin itself solve the problem? It seems to me that the problem would still exist. Basically, what I'm looking at is the spigot adapter on the rifle forms the lower half of a stepped fit while the spigot adapter on the bipod makes up the top portion of that stepped fit. Unfortunately the steps have a large amount of clearance between the two allowing a decent amount of free cant.

Although I received my V2 adaptor today, my AI rifle is stored at another location so I won't be able to test it for a few days. I'll report back what I find out.

Not as of yet but we may be getting closer.

Can you shed some light on the bipod rolling slightly rearward but not forward? It seems as it's part of the design but I'm unclear as to why.

That "rolling" feature allows you to preload the bipod with much less effort than say a harris bipod.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

Snkbit,

I think you will find that the V2 spigot removes the unwanted slop in the bipod as you have the ability to get the spigot locked up tight.

All thats left is the natural amount of play that the atlas itself actually has.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

I need to get the V2 spigot and see where that gets me. I'm thinking this Atlas would feel real nice under a new McM A5! I just can't seem to make this AICS feel how I want it.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

Since you have the V1 spigot, here is a quicl fix.....RTV Silicone, put a tiny amount were it mates up with the spigot on the chassis, on the shelf on the bottom of the hole opening. Stuff the bipod in there and let it dry overnight. Slop should be reduced a bit. Until you get the V2 that is really a quick fix.

LOL, I know. I have a severe case of ADD I guess. I haven't been happy with this AICS at all and the way the bipod spigot fit just kind of set it off.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

This is the V2 AI Spigot.

When the Atlas is installed with the V2 and it's all torqued properly there is some forward and back movement of the legs due to the "ball joint" design of the bipod. This is a design feature and one of the reasons the Atlas is tops for bipods. This little bit of play helps absorb some recoil without the feet moving.

After living with the Atlas V8 and V2 Spigot Adapter I don't know of any other bipod I would want on my AI.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

SnkBit, The V2 will make the spigot tight to the stock. Do a search here and you'll see it evolve and the why it did so.

The AICS, is a good solid stock, lots of users including me.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

You can upgrade the spigot. Also- I didn't have great luck with silicon, but I did have good luck taking the "slop" out of the spigot by doing this: I removed my skins, cut little "shims" out of a business card, and stacked them up between the spigot block and stock on each side until the play was taken out. Then I reinstalled the skins, which kept the business card shims in place. It doesn't work if you are taking the bipod on and off, but then again, why would you need to?

Hope that helps you.

Same here. I still can't imagine what "problem" the tensioning knob on the V2 spigot is solving.

Re: AICS, Atlas users

You definitely want to get one. Really it comes down to: do you want to use the AI spigot or do you want to get the pic rail kit? I tried both and went with the AI spigot due to the extremely easy on/off and to free up the underside of the stock somewhat when shooting positions. However I did feel the pic rail version (being a little closer to the shooter) was a little easier to load without slipping on surfaces like concrete or wood decking.

You guys are very persuasive ! Not to mention Kasey himself always visiting these threads to make sure the end user is happy . Even if they only buy one bipod . My order is in so I look forward to trying it out .

Re: AICS, Atlas users

I have an AiAW308 with an Atlas with spigot mount. I am used to the forward and rearward movement and is easy to load. I would not consider a Harris for the rifle as I use one of those also on another rifle. The other option is the AI bipod and is not even in the same league as ease of use and size.

In my opinion there is no comparison.

I have finally got the Atlas V8 Review posted:
