Ok, I went back several pages and didn't find a thread, so hopefully this hasn't been covered recently. I currently have a 2MOA Aimpoint on my AR. As a Scout Sniper I am questioning weather or not I should move to a 1-4 or 2-5.5 or similar scope on my AR or get a 3X or similar magnifier. Both have thier pros and cons from my limited point of view and experience. The dedicated scope offers more precision, however, as a S/S, often I am tasked with perimeter and thus possibly required in a close up role, even an add on to entry. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a "real" rifle with optics? If you do, then get an AP 3x. That way with two guns, you can cover the spectrum of your LE environment. (Dane Co SO correct?)

If you only have the AR, then find something 2-10x. Takes a little extra work to do cqb with 2x, but its not impossible. Pretty hard to ID a target at 200 yards through a AP 3x set up....

Don't know anything about your mission or job.

But I would suggest a 1-4x (like the new SS 1-4x). You get the 1x that you already have in the Aimpoint. You get the 3x that a magnifier provides for your Aimpoint. You get 4x for a bit more distance work. And you get a real reticle for better precision at range.

The Donut of the SS should work GREAT up close.

(SWFA - If you get angry about me using your images here, I apologize and will take them down ASAP)

Look here for more info on the brand new SS 1-4x. Their 3-9x is in current use in theater, and are built like a tank. I'm sure the 1-4x will be as good or better.

I do also have a 700 with great optics on it, however, we are multi use and don't generally deploy with both systems, so have to reach a good compromise with the AR platform. What i have now is an entry AR (personally owned). What I am looking to get is the best of both worlds if that can be had. One that I can deploy as a sniper or perimeter with, or can use if tasked as entry for that perticluar issue. Of course, we need to buy our own stuff too, so $$ are always an issue.

You are asking quite a bit out of your weapon system in my opinion. If deploying as a sniper, precision and being able to maintain a good visual is obviously very important. I wouldn't want to have anything that comprimises any of those two objectives. There are always trade-offs to equipment selection, you need to identify the purpose and your goals and choose accordingly. My opinion is the differance between entry and sniper are too differant to be carrying one weapon platform.

And I definately feel your pain about buying your own equipment, It sucks.

Know why the phrase speaks of two worlds? Its because there are two completely different things going on here. This is an age old question here. If you solve it, you will put half the gun industry out of business, and make the other half filthy rich.

Web, not trying to be a dick. I had to start a business to pay for my SWAT job

Re: Aimpoint 3X VS Scope on AR platform

While the 3 power will not give you scope like precision, If you are using your mangnifier mostly for tgt ID and putting as many rounds as quickly as possibe into said tgt, go with the 3x magnifier. Especially if you are moving in and out of the street and also conducting CQB.
One of my ARs is set up with a 3x and an eotech, the other has a horus blackbird 1.5x8 with an aimpoint T1 mounted on top. I don't run the blackbird less then 4power and the T1 rocks for aerial gunnery and shooting out of moving vehicles.
If i could have only one, I'd go with the blackbird/T1 combo. I mean this is snipers hide gotta roll with the scope!

Re: Aimpoint 3X VS Scope on AR platform

Lowlight did a Snipershide exclusive with the Berrett REC7 and the USO SN4 1.5-6x a while ago. It is on You-Tube/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-JgB6fELfo /. His comments were favorable except in maybe CQB where you might want to have a small dot sight. Being my SN3, for my M21, will have a C2 reticle, I feel it would be beneficial to have the same reticle option in my sight on my carbine. Which that is available in the SN4. So that is the direction I'm leaning to. I had an Aimpoint. it is ok, but I felt like I lost a little too much precision with it. A lower power variable is on my want list.

Re: Aimpoint 3X VS Scope on AR platform

M21, sounds like we are in the same boat. I want a more precise scope than my Aimpoint 2MOA, which leads me to a low power variable, but also have to be perimeter and sometimes entry so need something that will work for all. Again, I appreciate the info you all are throwing at me.
