If I wanted a self defence / protect my family 7.62 X 39 rifle it would be the AK hands down. If I wanted more of a hunting 7.62 x 39, I would consider the SKS with a nice Eotech / Aimpoint or whatever floats my boat at the time..SmokeRolls </div></div>
+1 ..The SKS paratrooper version(very short) I have is absolutely excellent for hunting, especially in maine when its cold and you have a thick jacket for sitting in a stand or whatever.
The stock is a short pull like a junior rifle and it works great with a thick jacket
.
Normally a thick jacket can kind of be in the way IMO(but I'm no great hunter or anything).
Itsnice having a short pull and mild recoiling rifle that pulls up quick.
I handload softpoints for it and its just an amazing rifle IMO.
Its VERY under appreciated.
After owning my sks,,I wouldn't trade it for an AK for the purpose I use it for.
If you want a RAMBO style assault rifle for the cool factor than an AK is the one
.
For home defense I 100% agree I would pick the AK with some good military mags.
AK's are very nice but not needed for me.The mag issue is something to consider im sure but I have no issues with my aftermarket 5 rounder.
