So I am looking at getting a Romanian WASR because I figured why not. Thats about as good a reason as any around here for getting another fire arm right? Big thing is everything else I own weather AR platform or bolt gun is big and really heavy and Im looking for something smaller and lighter to play wit hat the range. My question is knowing that most AK varients are not going to be nearly as accurate as almost any off the shelf AR15, are they accurate enough to be confident hunting whitetail inside 200 yds. I have no experience with AK's and I was lookin g to get one at some point and I am also looking for something new to try in the field this season. Obviously no junk wolf ammo for hunting.
Any input would be great thanks.

Re: AK for Hunting

not sure about Mich, but in SD you have a limit of 5rds/mag for hunting big game, i'm sure you know all rules and regs, might as well give it a go, i'm not into the AK thing more of an AR guy but if you can place the shot well, why not??? let us know how it goes.

Re: AK for Hunting

the AK 7.62 x 39 is a good hunting round. Pretty close to a 6.8mm that I use for hunting. With an optic I would feel very comfortable using an AK shooting whitetail within 300 yards. It will require some practice so you feel confident enough with the AK. I am pretty sure AK's are used for hunting in Russia all the time.

Re: AK for Hunting

i have looked at the 6.8 for an upper for my ar but the AK seems like fun and the cheap ammo to play is nice as well. just read an article on pulling bullets from cheap ammo to make match ammo

Re: AK for Hunting

Hornady also makes ammo for it now with the V-Max bullet. If my 6.5x47L isn't done by the time I get back and for deer season, I am going to be taking my AK out. I've got a lil shorty mag for it, and it should be good to go. AKs are more accurate that a lot of people give them credit for. Within 300yds, you will have no problems with a deer. Just make sure you practice with it at the range beforehand so you know how it performs.

The WASR variant can be hit or miss. A friend of mine has one that had terrible trigger slap. He fixed this with a new trigger and was happy with it. The one I got, the trigger was great, but had some issuses with some mags not wanting to go in. That was fixed with a file and removed some metal from the the reciever. I now can use any mags I feel like. I've put thousands of rounds through mine without a single problem.

Ballistics are almost identical to a 30-30.

Got an M1S ar upper in x39. It has killed out to 235 by previous owner. there are HP, SP, and now V-max rounds available. Heard good things about the 154gr softpoint, and the 123-125 hollowpoints too.
