ive seen ak's that come with a long strangely contoured strip of steel on the left side of the reciever that i assume is for a scope mount. what is this thing for/ what mounts are available that are compatible with this side rail thing? any information is appreciated.

Re: ak rail on side of reciever

The side rail is a scope mount, there are several kinds of rail mounts that fit this, go to cheaperthandirt.com you can see the types of mounts

Re: ak rail on side of reciever

yeah its a scope mount.

most people use a different type of mount, because the side mounts tend to be heavy and off center.

here i made it easier:

this is the side mount scope rail. costly, heavy, and return to zero is questionable should you make use of the quick detach feature. also, optics sit really high:

this is a rail that replaces the gas tube that allows a low mount of optics and a red dot to co witness the irons. gets real hot after firing. return to zero isnt a problem, because you dont take it off. this is the most popular option, and is battle proven:

this is what im getting, a rail that attaches to the front leaf sight and the clamps down on the rear tang. makes it more natural, and dosnt get hot after firing. still can allow co witness with a tiny optic. return to zero and durability have been proven:

Re: ak rail on side of reciever

its not that it hurts accuracy at all. but some scopes and mounts are not centered over the bore, but off to the left. the type of mount you choose to use is entirely up to you, i merely posted an example of each of the different types available and some pros and cons of each

Thanks Tyler! I've been looking for an affordable way to put my EOTECH on my MAK90. Krebs is way too expensive and I was thinking about putting one of those side mounts but I'd have to drill holes into the receiver and/or buy a tool to do rivets. I don't like the Ultimak stuff because it sits way too forward for my liking. I definitely don't like the rails on the dust cover, don't look like it'll hold zero at all.

No problem! I didn't mean to seem biased toward any one brand or type in particular, I've just done a ton of research and the Texas Weapon Systems rail is the choice I made. Return to zero has been tested and seems to be exceptional. And it sits low enough to usa an optic and still have a cheek weld. Seems to be the best answer!

Found out early on that the rails on the dust cover are made for mall ninjas that just want their shit to look tacticool, not functional. Found one cheap and threw it on a friends AK, we broke it before we finished off a single mag.
