Al Qaeda retakes Fallujah

Just ran across this on Fox News and it hit home as we're approaching the end of combat ops in Afgh at the end of the year and it's anyone's guess what THIS place will look like after we leave. I know a bunch of Hiders were in Fallujah, and many lost friends there. This just plain sucks.

Have you seen what they have done to Red Beach at Tarawa? Its a garbage dump. Khe Sahn was abandoned almost immediatly after it was defended at great cost. Not being a prick, its the ebb and flow of battle or the march of history. I feel bad for those that fought and died there but I think what they did taught a lot of insurgents a lesson that saved lives through the rest of the stay in Iraq.

Im less alarmed by Fallujah going to Al Quaeda than by the denial in this country of certain realities and allowing the destruction of our Constitution. We are becoming what we fear while laying out the welcome mat for Fallujah to come here.

Agreed. Funny you mention Khe Sahn, I'm trying to plan a trip to Vietnam this year and am working on the logistics of visiting Khe Sahn while I'm there.

Ive seen news reports of those that have gone to Khe Sanh and from what they have shown there is not much there. We levelled it when we left and I guess the new management can spin it as a "great victory" by claiming they made the Americans leave but a trip in to the jungles would probably still evidence shreds and remains of the NVA battalions that were blasted into oblivion in those hills.

The war in Iraq was started for all the wrong reasons and was ran by people that had little to no strategic plan on what they were doing. For all the evil that Saddam Hussein was he was the counter-balance to the Iran/Shia hordes that are now dominating the crescent from Iran to Lebanon and we will pay a deep cost, as well as Israel, for unleashing the beast of Shia and Iranian Persian reemergence of their empire from the 1500 until the 1900's when the U.S. ruined that one too in 1953. The one real consequence of the war in Iraq was the lack of strategic thought from the U.S. on the unintended consequences going forward.

Syria is now the battle for Shia dominance but they are not doing all too well. It is harder to fight an insurgency then to participate in one. I think it is time for the U.S. to do to Iran what they did to us in Iraq. I would love to see some EFP's be dealt against Iranians and Hizballah fighters especially since they don't have uparmored vehicles.

AQI taking over Fallujah for a short period of time is more telling of the lack of control the Shia dominated government forces operating in the Al Anbar Province. Maliki has his hands full handling the Sunni's in Iraq and the Kurds are always there to give him a hard time too when ever it fits their goals. And, the U.S. government is left supporting the Shia because we put them there and it just may be a losing cause. The Shia government will always side with the Shia in Iraq unless it because an Arab versus Persian issue.

It's a good thing that we aren't involved with Syria.

Iran's Special Forces(Pasdaran if I recall) are supporting Assad's forces. Al-Qaeda, and other terrorist factions, are supporting the rebels. Couple that with Syria being one of the first countries to send insurgents after us, during the March to Baghdad no less.

Good thing we stayed out of it, they might have stopped killing each other.

First Faluja was a tragedy, shoulda taken the leash off then and there, second one snuffed out a lot of bad guys, a lot. Lets see what happens. Iraq and Afghanistan is my/our generations Vietnam. As usual politicians used us for their zeal to make a lasting legend of their time in office. We spent blood and our youth in the desert and won all the battles, but in the end, I think the history of our exploits will be remembered as having little effect on the Middle East and only caused a larger rift and caused many more conflicts...from North Africa to the Middle East it is a blaze with conflict. I spent numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and lost several years of watching my children grow up so I could chase the various "bad guys" around the battlefield. I can be philosophical about it now but there was a time when just mentioning it would send me into a rage.

I was promoted there during a tour by my dad, a Vietnam Marine. I've been to Khe Sanh a total of two times and there are still remnants of the fighting there...

People should not be suprised, what did you think would happen after we left? I proudly served and throughout my many deployments in the region, I was not there to solve some nations problems, I was there to do my best to ensure that every wounded Marine or Sailor I layer hands on had the chance to make it home alive (FMF Corpsman). Many times lives are saved but sometimes there is nothing that can be done so we press on and try to do more the next time. Just as we have many people in this country that don't agree with those in power, that region has the same problem and I encountered many that showed compassion and care to us at great risk to their own lives and the lives of their family. I don't argue whether we had been right or wrong for being there, most of the boots on the ground did not care either, we just wanted to take care of each other and come home at the end of our tour. JMHO

It's really no mystery. All the chem weapons coming out of Syria today are stamped "Property of Saddam Hussein".
