U.S. Soldier Held in Alaska on Suspicion of Spying

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A military policeman assigned to a unit in Anchorage, Alaska, was being held Wednesday on suspicion of spying and was expected to face military court charges within days.
Spc. William Colton Millay, 22, likely will be charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice by the end of the week, a spokesman for US Army Alaska told the Army Times.
Millay, from Owensboro, Ky., is part of a unit known as the Arctic Enforcers. The unit recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan.
He was arrested Oct. 29 after a joint FBI and US Army Counterintelligence investigation. The US Army Alaska spokesman would not comment on the circumstances surrounding Millay's arrest.
He remains in pretrial confinement at Anchorage Correctional Complex.
The FBI denied reports from bloggers that Millay's arrest was connected to the arrest last year of former intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, who is accused of leaking thousands of documents to WikiLeaks.
"This has nothing to do with WikiLeaks," FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez told the Anchorage Daily News.
Friends in Millay's Kentucky hometown said they doubted the army's claims. "I just don't see it," Janssen Payne, 25, told the Army Times. "I just don't see the motivation for him to do it."
Millay is "as loyal to his country as he is to his best friends," Payne added.
Millay's older brother also served in the military.
