• All K-12 public schools statewide will close effective Monday, March 16 resuming Monday, April 13, as Louisiana seeks to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

“We are at an inflection point now and we are going to take bold action to minimize the further spread of this illness. That is why I am issuing this order today, ending all events of more than 250 people, closing our schools, and reducing the amount of face-to-face public interaction at state government buildings,” Gov. Edwards said. “In a separate executive order, I will grant Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin’s request to move our upcoming elections for April and May to June and July. The limits on gatherings of 250 people or more statewide is based on federal CDC guidance given the community spread which we are currently experiencing. These steps are necessary to protect the health and safety of the people of Louisiana from the risk of COVID-19.”

Plenty of time for time off from school with all the extra days planned for weather events. Spring Break is starting/on-going for most, so they just extended the events.

I'd rather kids be at home, than some dumbass anti-vaxx get the ball rolling at the elementary level.

It probably vary by district. I'm in KY, in a city with 130k school aged children, and they make a point to do it. Don't know how Louisiana works...

They have several school buses that move around the city and deliver food.

They also have a list of schools (district has 174 schools), where students can go pick up food. The list of schools that are open for this are given to the students ahead of time.

We're overpopulated and this ain't the worst bug actually... We might be better off spreading it, losing 3% of the overpopulation, and developing a natural resistance so the next time it comes around (and it will) it won't be an issue anymore.

All Ventura County Schools shut down here this week, but we pulled my daughters out of school last week. My younger daughter has Asthma issues so I didn’t want to risk it. Just got word last night that LA has officially shut down all events, group gatherings over 50 people, dine in restaurants, bars etc. Washington has done the same. I DO NOT agree with government mandating those actions, however, I’m also seeing idiots running around like it’s buisiness as usual because they “feel” fine. Meanwhile their passing that shit along to people who are being affected without giving a damn about anyone but themselves. There are a TON more people out there that have the virus that just aren’t showing symptoms or being tested.

My personal belief is us as a free people have a responsibility to socially distance ourselves on our own. China flat out forced their quarantines. Dragging people from their homes, cars etc and marching them off to isolation. And it “seemed” to work as atleast what they’re numbers are showing. They’re communist and that what communist / socialist regimes do. Unlike China, we’re a free people and with that freedom comes a responsibility to make those types of decisions for the greater good on our own. As we all know, sadly, self sacrifice for the greater good is no longer a top priority (Or even a priority at all) for the average American.

yes, I do believe 90% of this is politically motivated and being spun as such, no need for panic and mass hysteria, however, be responsible, do the right thing, stop fighting over toilet paper, help you neighbor, look after your elderly. Check in on them. Make sure they’re ok, and they don’t need anything. Call them on the phone. I’m sure there’s some lonely folks out there right now. That’s the American way, or atleast that’s how it used to be...

why can't parents feed their own kids? I thought that was supposed to be part of parenting. I know i'll get grief for this notion, so have at it. Now the bigger deal is and i can see this, what do parents do that have both parents working and the daycares are shut down? According to my granddaughters who both work at a daycare after they get out of school in the afternoon, if the schools shut down, the daycares shut down. They will probably both be hired to babysit at some people's houses, but what will the majority do for someone to watch their young children?

Sadly this is not the country us older folks grew up in. Today some people have kids just to up their checks, an could care less about those kids.
The issue I have is children do not have a choice of who their parents are, the nation, or circumstances they are born into. As a dirt poor kid growing up I hate to see any child have to go thru what I did. Interesting how some people could care less about children,...that is very telling insight into who they really are. No child,... regardless of race, color, or creed, deserves to be treated like an adult or animal just because they were born to fucked up parents. If we allow that train of thought to stay the course or move forward, we are no better than their parents. I have went out of my way before an will do so again if need be, to protect children no matter who they are,.....

Last week Thursday, most local school systems here in MI came to the same conclusion - closing the schools would be a problem, since that's the only place that some children get a good meal and find a safe, supportive environment.

Then the state government made the call Friday morning to close everything down for the next three weeks (effectively four weeks, if we include spring break). And with the new CDC recommendations, that will probably stretch out to eight weeks. That's gonna hurt.

For those children who struggle with a shitty domestic situation - and trust me, there are more of them than most people can imagine - they are going to suffer. Badly. For those that live in some sort of community and who have the capability of helping out, please find ways to do so (your local school adminstrator would be a good point of contact).

Even for those kids in a good home situation, they're gonna need some social interaction and some calm adult leadership to get them through this mess.

Here's an idea , if your so dam worried about those kids then do something about it.
Every local church keeps up with needy families in that community , they know which families need help. If you really want to do something then go to your local church and tell them you want to help with those families . They will give you multiple options. But I doubt your really that concerned. You will just sit around wanting government to solve it.

I may be late to the conversation. I did not read all the above, but thought I'd throw in what's happening behind the Iron Curtain of Illinois.

All schools closed after today, Monday.

All restaurants and taverns closed after close of biz today, as well. Drive-thru or carry out only.

All state workers allowed paid leave if confirmation of symptoms of covid19 or suspected covid19 by medical personnel. .

Not an exec order by Gov, but recommended and implemented by respective admins.:

Most hospitals - no or restricted visitors

IDOC - No visits or volunteer staff allowed inside facilities. Also, all incoming paid staff required to have temp taken before entering.

No gathering larger than 250 people, including staff.


The ones I feel bad for are the people who have kids and are working a couple part-time jobs waiting tables or the like, in addition to their FT job, just to make the ends come close to meeting. Now their kids are home and their part-time job is closed. As if times weren't tough enough for them.

This latest crisis, if it plays out the way I think it might, is going to forge an interesting generation. Keep in mind that the Greatest Generation got that way through adversity (Depression followed by WWII), and the kids who are currently in grade school may end up following a similar path.
