I was told if im going to only use my gun, I could neck size but if im reloading for different rifles I have to FL everytime which I see the point in FL but why not be able to just neck size when your using only your (1) AR-15?

I heard you have to FL size nomatter what everytime, True?

Can you neck size for just your rifle? Or not?

Re: Always FL size for AR's?

I only necksize for my ar. Single shot, so in the lands, using 80gr bullets with a hot load of RL-15 for years now and no issue of any kind.

Re: Always FL size for AR's?

We all ways FL resize for gas guns. Even if single round loading for the 600 yard service rifle matches. The problem is when you drop the bolt, there may not be enough force to get the weapon into battery. (bolt not full forward) with a bolt gun this is no problem as you force the handle forward and down to lock it in. On an AR even with a forward assit it may be hard to get it seated. Firing with the bolt not locked in can be Very bad for you score. On the M1A type rifles this is also a the same. I use a Small base dies for my Ar as it has to work every time. I have seen server shooters try the neck sizing only on Auto Loaders and non so far have had any long term luck. (Luck may not be the word to use as someof them messed up their rifles) best of luck reloading but be safe first and formost.

Re: Always FL size for AR's?

I am using a factory colt match h-bar loading the sierra 69g hpbt. At first I always fl sized all my brass, I even used the small base dies as mentioned above. I was told that I could not neck size for the same reasons. If you are like me I don't always listen to the norm. but I do try to lean on the side of safety. So I took about 40 once fired brass shot by my rifle only and started neck sizing them, I was actually pleased to find that I didn't have any ejection or loading problems. My average group sizes improved by about a 1/16 inch and I had a few five shot groups that were in the .300's. Now with all that being said, this worked in my rifle, may not work in yours. I was very carefull about checking for pressure signs and looking at the brass after every shot. I still neck size for this rifle and have had very good results doing so.

Re: Always FL size for AR's?

with normal powder loads, you would not have pressure signs. that is not the problem. It comes from the round not being full seated in the chamber and the bolt in full battery. Not trimming brass is another area that new reloaders get into problems with. A shooter is not going to blow up his rifle with every round only ONE! If i could find that one round and take it out of the box I would feel much better about giving advise to new reloaders and shooters about doing non stardard pratice. I went in the army in 72 and ret. out in 2000 and i had never seen a slam fire. I was in the airborne and SF so i shot all the time. One day i was playing with a m1 3006(last year) and the bolt stuck open. I took my hand and hit it to knock it forward. Wow, slam fire and it came back and hit my hand. I know better than to do that. real Dumb. Thought i had lost my thumb. And that is why we do things a certain way. And some times when we step out of line, it hurts. I say be very carfull on the reloads. i reload better than 400 rounds a month, I shoot 3 matches of CF and then pratice. I double check every thing and hope others do as well. Does none of us any good for someone to get hurt.
