Here is my load:

300 win mag
200 Grain SMK
72.0 Gr of Reloader 22
BR-2 Primer
Nosler Case (new)

I got one hell of a delay, I can hear the firing pin hit the primer, then wait a half sec....BOOM!

Man it was screwing me up... I shot horrible groups, 3 inch from POA flyers and shit... lol I guess that is too slow of a powder for this caliber? I thought RL 22 was tits for 300 win mag? Am I crazy? Am I missing something? Help me out reloading gods! At first I thought something was wrong with my trigger or the gun itself.... I tried a different load, and it shot fine... WTF?

Gun in question
Rem 700 300 Win Mag 5R barrel
Timney Trigger
Mcree Precision Chassis

I bought the primers 3 months ago from a large sporting goods store, I doubt the primers sat there for too long.

Very pronounced primer strikes. Oh shit, I just remembered one didn't fire, and so I waited, pulled it out, looked at it and put it back in, second strike was a no go... so maybe this is a primer issue?

Yeah, i would use Magnum primers for sure. Sorry, not familiar with the BR2 primers. I shoot CCI.

BR2 are CCI, but you should be using Mag Primers. My 300WM loaded with RL22 won't shoot well with the CCI mag primers, it likes the winchester WLRM primers

Back in '09 (I believe) CCI suspended their BR-2 production due to 'sensitivity' issues, IIRC. You might want to call them up and check to see if this is indeed true and what the lot numbers of the suspect primers are. You might have some bad ones with ignition delay.

BR-4s are not magnum primers and the 300 WM is, well...a magnum cartridge. Just sayin'...lol.

It would be great if you post the outcome. I to use RL-22 69 grains
pushing a 210 smk and never had any problems useing Federal
match lr non magnum, also tried the Federal Magnums and noticed
no difference shooting across an Oehler chrono.

I will, It might be a while, this month is looking busy, but I do plan on doing some reloading over the thanksgiving holiday.... I will post up the outcome. Hopefully its just a primer issue. I am having a hell of a time finding a load this gun likes..

Re: Am I crazy (Reloader 22 Load)?

ctt, I tried almost the exact same thing messing with br-2 primers with RE 22 in my 300. I had the same results as you did. When switching to Mag primers it was an instant cure. I even messed with seating depth which seemed to have a sort of hit and miss firing. If you're set on keeping the br2 primers with the smks, try a different powder. I ended up with some of my best groups with IMR-4350 with BR-2 primers. My rifle is a HS Precision HTR in 300 win mag. Hope this helped

Wayne, yes it does help.. THanks man I will switch primers. That seems to be the problem. My 4350SC load with BR2 has grouped the tightest so far....

Re: Am I crazy (Reloader 22 Load)?

I had the same problem last saturday with a 7mmRM using Wolf Mag primers and IMR 4350. I had 1 dud and 2-3 hangfires, out of 8 shots. I took the remaining a part and started over with new brass, powder and primers.

I took the dud apart and found the powder all clumped up like it had been wet. I dont know if I had some moisture in the case or oil or something, but the 12 unfired I took apart looked fine. It was very embarrasing to have this happen in front of all my friends. I dont think its the primers or powder since I loaded some 300WM with the same Wolf primers and IMR 4350 powder and the all fired just fine.

Re: Am I crazy (Reloader 22 Load)?

cttbax,

My experience with RL22 is that it shoots the lights out with CCI 250 primers behind 74 gr and 200 SMK's. Your load might be a little light, but that does NOT explain the hang fire. I've heard LOT'S of stories of hangfires in WM's w/ LR primers.

Last year I switched to 208 Amax's and H1000 and as long as I load them just off the lands they shoot as well as RL22 (using CCI 250 primers). H1000 is cleaner and less temp. sensitive.

Re: Am I crazy (Reloader 22 Load)?

I ran a similar load with wolf mag primers and got the same delay you are describing. Switched to fed, win, primers and delay was gone. I only tried 1 tray of wolf, I have 5000 of them so I hope it was a fluke. Temp was cold, around 40 but I have shot the other primers in cold weather without any issues

Re: Am I crazy (Reloader 22 Load)?

Lights out of my TRG w/ re22. I think like everybody else has said run a mag. primer and also your load might be a little light as well.
