Getting into the 22 game and have some ammo questions. I know/assume the BR guys that are winning are probably all shooting Tenex and the equivalent but I think I want to get more into the NRL22 sort of shooting. Is there a speed limit for these competitions like in PRS? Seems like some of the higher velocity stuff might be advantageous at distance or is this a myth?

Rifles will be Sako Quad 22 trainer chambered for Ely EPS match which I don’t think is available anymore, Anschutz 64 and Volquartsen stainless and Kidd 10/22. Not sure if this matters or not though.

So obviously the equivalent of the Ely EPS match will be on the list to try but what else would you guys recommend to start with as I don’t know all that much about rimfire ammo. Price is a factor to a certain degree but not to the extent of giving up a ton of accuracy.

Thanks in advance.

High velocity ammo is nowhere as accurate as subsonic match ammo.

The bullet coming back through the speed of sound isn't good for accuracy.

Try some Eley Edge if you want to stick with an EPS bullet profile. Its pretty good, but isn't stupid expensive like Tenex is.

At least 15 guys running sk pistol match here at our matches in Nevada in everything from bottom of the line rifles to the vudoos as well as Kidd super grades and plane old rugers.

If you want inexpensive try the sk line and or wolf ammo.

when i lot test i will call who ever im buying from or who ever has what im looking for and tell them i am lot testing and make sure they have plenty of cases on hand of the ammo im interested in...i then order 1 or 2 50 boxes of each if something shoots well i order a case.

this is a great place to buy from super nice ppl...they usually have most of the reasonable priced ammo in stock and if you send a check shipping is only $15 bucks.

You want to use target and match ammo. The Sako should shoot any Eley ammo from Target to Tennex. I have a Kidd Supergrade and a CZ 455 Varmint, they like Eley Target and Club, and the new Wolf ME and MT made be Eley. They also like SK SD+ and SK rifle match and Lapua CenterX. All of these are good in my guns, out to 200yds. CCI SV is a low cost base line for target, it is cheap and shoots well in my guns. I have some high grade ammo to test at long range ( Tennex, Eley match, lapua PB and Midis ) My guns shoot will shoot the lower ammo as well as the high grade ammo out to 100yds.

I would start by getting a little of each ammo I listed, see what your guns likes, then you test by lots.

47guy, thanks for the link. I've been buying Center-X for a number of years and that's the best price I've seen.

I shoot Center-X exclusively in my accurate rifles. Generally, it has produced averages in the low threes, at 50, which is my limit considering the circumstances, equipment, etc. It makes no sense to me, when you take into account all of the expenses for this sport, to try and save 10 cents a round. The increased number of fliers makes it very difficult whether your shooting is improving.

do you shoot bench rest?

Isn’t the maximum distance 100 yards in NRL .22?

In my Vudoo every ammo I have fired through it has been MOA or under at 100 yards. This includes CCI SV, Norma Match, SK Standard +, Aguilla Match, SK Rifle Match.

I was grouping well under a 3” group at 330 yards yesterday with Norma Match. Not too bad since I got 1500 rounds for like $80.

Check out Grafs for Center-x as well. It is on sale every now and then, was last week, for $10.17 a box. Shipping is also a flat $7.99 all the time.
Their SK Rifle match which I love was the cheapest I had seen around, but it has jumped up in the last couple months. Pistol Match is still $5.99.

Norma Match, less than 3 inch groups at 330 yards?

Outdoors? Possible, but I'd need to see it for myself.
I can barely get Tenex, Midas+ or R50
to produce five shot 3 inch groups at 200 yards on a consistent basis.
What I get are random acts of accuracy
when the MV's cooperate.

I knew someone would say that and of course I didn’t drive down to take pictures.

I stopped at three shots on paper and went back to shooting a 8” plate. I can hit that pretty regularly but some shots drop low out of no where.

I do not think that it’s a normal thing to get such great groups but it was working right yesterday.
This was my first time vet shooting on paper but thought I would try since hitting steel is pretty easy for me. I watched the bullets fly and was surprised they even hit close to welters I was aiming.

When your holding 2 miles of wind everything seems like luck haha.

Fairly accurate description of rimfire paper punching at 200 yards.
Right Jesse?

Vertical spread at 330 yards is about 0.3 inches per 1 fps difference in MV.
That's with a match quality 22lr.
So 5 shots would have to have an ES
less than 10 fps, and to do so repeatedly
would require absolutely magic ammo.

K, I'm not saying it can't be done.
I've surprised myself a time or two.
But they were random acts of accuracy
when wind and ammo cooperated.
Probably caused by compensating errors. ;)

Here's my bench. The rifle is a 52C Sporter re-issue with a Leupold 4.5-14X LR. The rifle is 8.5# with a 3# trigger. The picture is from the original 6X5 thread from five years ago.

Kadams you are correct the monthly NRL stages max out at 100yds. NRL wants anyplace with a 100yd. range to be able to compete. They encourage additional stages, to be determined by the match director, but those will not count in the monthly scoring.
