So I'm annealing for the first time. It's 2nd fired Winchester brass for my 300 win mag. I bought a bottle of 650 degree Tempilaq. I painted a thin coating on the inside of the case necks and let it dry. I then held the cases in my fingers by the head and rotated the necks through the flame of my Benzomatic MAP gas torch. Here is where I'm getting confused:

I'm getting some color change on the tempilaq, but it also appears to almost burn and turn into a char. Is that normal?

Also, the cases get pretty warm in my fingers, but not to the point that it burns me and I have to drop them.

After I apply the heat to them I dunk the neck and half the body into cold distiller water. I can't tell if I'm applying to much heat. I don't want to have a load blow up in my face. Any pointers?

If you can hold them in your bare hands they are not over annealed. That's how I do it with MAPP. Dark room, bing cherry color and lay them on a dry towel.

Re: Annealing Help

I've read certain articles and viewed certain videos on you tube where people are getting the necks glowing red in color. I didn't get anywhere near that color. Basically my tempilaq turned into a dark black crusty blob inside the case neck. From looking at the brass you don't really see any color difference compared to cases I haven't done.
