Gunsmithing Another Muzzle Brake ?

I have a heavy muzzle crowned bbl barrel. The OD is .820". Would this muzzle brake be a good fit? I want a straight one, and don't care if it's sticks out wider than the barrel a bit. Also just curious, do they have to remove your scope for installation?

Yes your scope comes off, and the barreled action comes out of the stock. It basically gets broken down so it will fit in the lathe.

I write down a lot of info on my targets including the elevation and windage settings. When I go out on a day with similar weather conditions and all that, I just look at a target from a day like that and know right where to set it. No biggie.

Don't know about that brake but you have to ask yourself, do I want a brake I can remove or is it just going to stay on the weapon. If it's going to stay on the weapon look at something like the Badger Thruster brake. If you want to take the brake on and off then look at the Vais.

It's really is up to you and what you are looking for.

Yeah I just want a threaded one. The Vais ones are pretty sweet. Nobody makes one in my caliber though. Does it matter what size the hole at the end of the brake is?

I might be wrong but, after you re-zero the work done shouldn't alter your exterior ballistics. You will have to re-zero but that's not going to change your "come ups" or how the bullet will act once it leaves the barrel.

Yeah it should be fine. Does it matter what caliber brake I get? I can't find anyone that makes them for a .17 hmr unless it's a whole barrel.

There are more effective brakes than the Vias brake. Most brakes have ports to the side. The Vias is ported 360 degrees. So, if you shoot it prone, it will spray you with whatever is on the ground under the barrel with strong force. Plus, I do not think it is a very effective brake. IMO, the 2 best brakes out there are the Tubb brake and the Little and Fat Bastard brakes. The Tubb has 4 port close together, and works very well at reducing recoil. The Bastard brakes actually vent the gasses at an angle behind you. These brakes are loud, but very effective.

What caliber do you have? You order the brake with a exit hole smaller and have it opened up for your caliber when it's installed.

Why are you putting a brake on a 17HMR? Spend your cash on Ammo, if you cant handle a 17 with any weight you had better not try CF rifles.
