Another "What Scope" question

I will start participating in rimfire matches that have small targets at various ranges out to about 210 yards. My current spare scope, a B&L Elite 6-18, won't work because it doesn't have target turrets. I would like to avoid having to swap one of my better scopes back-and-forth between rifles.

I'm on a tight budget for the moment, so while I'd love to get another Nightforce, that's way out of my present price range.

Does anyone have experience with a scope (preferably in the $200 or less range) that has target turrets (at least on elevation), SFP, MOA-MOA, fine cross-hair reticle, at least 20x power, reasonable clarity out to 210 yards, and that will last through 4-6 matches? Variable or fixed-power.

So far, the only one I've spotted is a Tasco 6-24.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you,
Richard

I've used the Tasco Target / Varmint 6-24x42 w/AO & Mil-Dots, for years. I've had no problems with them on three .22lr Bolt Action Rifles. Also, if you're going out to 200+ yards you will want to get at least a 20 MOA Base for use with subsonic ammo. Maybe you already had that in mind. I like the EGW 20 MOA Base ('cause that's what I have), but there's a lot of good things said about the DIP 25 MOA Bases. Long range rimfire shooting - loads of fun!

Sightron has two I'd recommend (they both have 20' per revolution - here in Cody with a 50 yard zero come up to 200 yards is ~ 23', so you're just barely going past one full turn, easier to keep track of) you can go to the Sightron web site and look at all the specs:

Big Sky 4-24x42 Sil - cross hair dot reticle - AO - 20' per revolution $538= Welcome to Big Supply Shop - Save Big on Name Brand Sporting Goods

Big Sky 6.5-20x50 - MOA reticle - side focus - 20' per revolution $619 = Welcome to Big Supply Shop - Save Big on Name Brand Sporting Goods

I have Super Snipers on both my .22 trainers. They're $100 more than your budget, but they have performed well. Both are 16X, but I also have a 20X on an AR that is just as good. Our local comps sound very similar to yours, and they do fine.

They are mil mil, so that may break the deal for you of you're married to those units.

Joe,

Thank you. I did get an EGW 20 MOA base for my 10/22 when initial testing showed that I ran out of elevation at 110 yards. I'll do some more searching, but it looks like the Tasco may be next on my "to buy" list.

I have several brands of match ammo on the way to see what my new Kidd barrel likes.

Cheers,
Richard

We have two of these Leapers UTG 1" 6-24X50 AO RGB Mil-dot Zero Lock/Reset Scope (SCP-U6245AORGW) on my sons Marlin Bolt actions.
Have had them for about 2 years and both have about 5000 rounds minimum on them. They've been dragged all over the prairies gopher hunting and have given us zero issues.
They hold their zero well and the adjustments are positive and repeatable.
Doesn't have fancy stuff like an etched reticle or anything, but I've been pleasantly surprised how good they are and how well they've lasted.
This is a Canadian website...I'm sure that in the U.S. you'd be knocking about $20-25 off the quoted price.

not the power range you are looking for
I have used a Nikon buckmaster for years, 6x18, SF, target knobs, all for under $300
we also shoot out to 211yd an the 18x has never had me wanting more.
hell the top shooters at our match use 16x
the SS 16x an the SS20x also good choice
some of the older tasco also ok but the newer stuff IMO is junk. we see a lot of the tascos an BSA go tits up over the last 4 years.
we turn the crap out of the knobs over a years wroth of matches, must say leupold #1, Nikon #2, then burris an bushnell, at our match.
that is in popularity
an yes a good 20moa base is needed.

Richard, when your ammo comes in go straight, to 200yds an see which ammo works at your longest yardage you will shoot.
most will shoot ok around 50yd but if yall shoot out to 200yd that's were you need to test JMO.

ps sightron also a great target scope, for paper, no so much for tactical matches. the ones I looked at seems small FOV to me

I've got a Mueller 8-32x44 with 1/8 target turret, side ranging/focus and very fine cross hairs. It's successfully been on every gun I own and now resides on my benchrest 10/22. Very accurate and repeatable movements, glass is a B+. NIB $259, ebay used but excellent about $220 or so.

They make two versions now, one mil-dot reticle and the other with a benchrest/target reticle. Before you order, make sure you get the right one.

I always recommend them to 22LR shooters and so do many folks over on rimfirecentral.com.

Interestingly, I just finished reading "Prone and Long-Range Rifle Shooting" by Nancy Tompkins (Gallagher) in which she said the same thing. Of course, she's shooting to 1000 yards with iron sights.

I had planned on initial testing at 50 yards before checking what happens at 200. The 50-yard target is 1 inch in diameter and the sizes increase with distance to 6 inches at 200.

Fortunately, the next match is in September, because I'll need to determine my scope settings for every 25 yards.

Richard,

Put a 50y zero on it and then measure drop at 200 or 250. You can use those numbers to back into a MV on your favorite ballistics program.

The Eley ammo I've tested (three flavors) has all shot the same at 50 as at 200, generally 1/2 - 1 moa across the board depending on the rifle.

Tim,

Let's see ... I have about 70 rounds left of the Eley Pistol Match that Hoser likes, some Remington (Eley) Club, a bunch of Wolf that's been on my shelf for years and that doesn't post consistent velocities, a few boxes of a discontinued or renamed Lapua, some left-over Gold Medal Match, and SK Match and Lapua Midas Plus on the way.

I certainly hope the new barrel likes one of those.

Shall try your testing recommendation.

Cheers,
Richard

midas plus pretty good ammo, have yet to see an rifle that dose not like it

what i meant by going to 200yd, yes 1st get it zero @ 50, then test groups @ 200
like we have found most 22 will hit a 1" dot at 50, but 22lr ammo will show itself past 150yd,
think of it this way, 22lr small bore type rifle was intended to shoot at 75yd are less.
an most will do that, but when you step out, to 100yd, an beyone, ol shit, what happen, to my one hole ,group, @ 50yd, then shoots a 4" group at 200yd,
will my friend its the ammo (are lot#)
were is the match you plan to shoot, won are lost at,ie 100,150,200 yd
that is what i meant, your best shooting ammo at 200yd will be fine at 50yd
but you best shooting ammo at 50yd may fall to shit, past 150yd
good luck, have fun let us know your out come
YO

ps take a look at leupold 6.5x20 EFR great scope for what you are doing
little more then what you wanted to spend, but buy once an done,
i have messed around with lessor scopes only to buy a leupold 6.5x20. an be done
look at all the money i could have saved if i just went ahead a bought one in the frist place, an if you want to sell it latter on , some one will jump all over it
