I have an Anschutz 54.18 in the AI-X Chassis with a folder, which I would like to carry in a Pelican 1700 with the stock folded, to make it as small a package as possible to transport. I plan to have custom foam cut to hold the rifle in the case.

My concern is how wide the rifle is with the stock folded, and will it fit safely in the 1700?

Gunfoam.com says the rifle will sit down 3 inches into the bottom foam, and the whatever height the folder protrudes above that will be held by the eggcrate foam in the lid, which is approximately 1.74" thick.

Anyone here transport their AT-X folder in a Pelican? Thanks for any insight.

The full size AIs had Storm-series cases, which are slightly deeper than similar-sized protektor series.

That insert is for a 54" case, and it appears to be designed to carry the rifle with the stock extended, not folded. My goal is to be able to run the shorter 1700 case since my rifle is only 30" long tip to butt with the stock folded.

You can basically down-size a model if you want when folded, eg a 1750 fits into a 1720 etc. see, eg Says it fits 27 in even...YMMV. The main case is the 44in interior storm 3200, which is a pelican 1720 equivalent loosely speaking.

The Main question you asked is about the thickness, so that's where the storm comes in with extra thickness.

Pelicans are a little faster to open/close because they don't have end-latches, but they are less deep, so relief cuts for the folder leave less padding.
