Re: Any f class matches in virginia??
KBT,
The only reason I needed help getting onto the paper the first time was 1) I dont have a chrono and my guesstimated velocity was higher than reality, and 2) I neglected to compensate for temperature, it was cold as a MF the day of the shoot. Both of these combined to make me low. They nice gentleman who was helping me (by watching for impacts through a spotting scope) saw strikes on the berm in front of the targets and told me to hold the top of the paper, and the next shot was on but low. I came up two minutes and started shooting.
If you have good chrono data and good ballistics, and can reliably shoot small groups, you can shoot distance.
New shooters: don't worry about how well you shoot, especially if it's windy. Based on comments I've heard at training matches, I harbor a deep suspicion that some highly-rated shooters don't even show up for matches when the wind is up. Of course you will care about your score, but mostly for me it is about shooting, and learning, and you don't accomplish either of those by staying home.
essayons,
Quantico is closer than Butner, both are fine facilities. I'm in Richmond, if you decide you want to start doing this we can carpool from some mutually convenient place.
Upcoming QSC event:
1000 Yard 4 Man Team Match and Individual Match - NRA EVENT
When Nov 5 – 6, 2011
DescriptionSaturday - 4 Man Team Sunday - Individual 2 x 1000 match bulletin pending
Don't be put off by the fact that it's a registered event. We accommodate new shooters, the registered ranked guys can be serious about it and the new guys can be helped at the same time. I have every reason to believe you'll find the same thing at Butner. The long distance shooting fraternity is a small group.
