Any of you 4x4 guys tried this?

I decided that I wanted to go back to stock wheels on my 05 TJ. Found a set in pretty good shape a few days ago and was planning on having them powder coated black. I had a budget I thought I was going to work with and come out ahead (rather than buying new) but I apparently didn't read the fine print on the powder coat website and it was going to cost more than I thought. Rather than spending as much on these used wheels as I would have on a new set I started researching painting them myself online. I found several threads where guys are using the spray on bed liner to coat their wheels and having good luck so I decided to give it a shot.

I blasted the face of the wheels (not concerned with the back) yesterday. Washed them really well to remove any oil or grease that the blasting didn't get rid of and started spraying them. I'm hoping it'll be at least as durable as paint but time will tell. I still have a few light coats to apply to even things out. The stuff doesn't spray very evenly but I like the look so far.

Phylo what a great idea, I haven't heard of it, but it sure looks great. Interested to see how it holds up for you.

several of the guys on the Wrangler Fourm use bedliner for everything they paint black. I've heard it holds up very well

I have used this stuff to coat the toes on my workboots, Holds up pretty damn well. Never used it on wheels though.

A friend of mine painted an entire expedition in about 1/4cm of the spray bedliner and it was our camping truck. You could do anything to the outside of that thing and it would shrug it off and keep rocking.

Yeah my truck wheels are bedlined. I HIGHLY recommend Duplicolor bedliner other most of the other aerosol cans. But it is a beach to clean, and it does need to be reapplied every so often (about 1-1.5 years).

My uncle did the entire inside and outside of a bronco in bedliner and it turned out really nice. That was about 7 years ago and it still looks good.

Cool! might do that with some H2's for my Heep rig. Gots one question, if you too much overspray will it affect the bead seal or did you just scrape off excess?

make sure you tape off the bead area and the face of the lug nut area. When I had my custom shop I used the Duplicolor aerosol to do the bottom side of vehicles (kinda like undercoating) and on roll cages and always had good adhesion.

I only sprayed the front of the wheels, taped off just below the backside of the rim. I didn't mask the face of the lug holes though. Do you think it will create a problem?

i used aerosol bed liner from walmart on my jeep liberty renegade rock slider bars a month ago. havnt seen much action yet so they still look great, but time will tell. the bed liner doesnt hide imperfections very well so make sure it looks smooth before you spray or it will show. i brushed on some super thick primer my dad had "something red oxide" and the brush marks show. i put on two coats so maybe more coats would look better??? wasnt concerned enough to smooth em out perfect cause they arent very noticeable under the jeep. they look awesome from 10'

The only problem we have seen with spray on bedliner from cans is that after a few months they turn greyish white. The rear bumper on the Dak has seen a little abuse so we decided to use some spray liner on it two years ago. After about two months it turned to a light color and looked like hell. If you experience the same issue with your wheels, remove the stuff and use a few baked on coats of the good spray that will withstand heavy duty use. That of course means removing the tires etc.

Looks great!

We have a storm chaser here that did his entire vehicle with commercial bedliner. Hail stones bounce right off.

Regarding the lug area, you will want a clean surface for the lug nuts. As the finish compresses / scrapes away, proper torque may not be maintained.

Duratracs are the way to go. I travel alot on rock oil-field roads. The Duratracs are one of the few tires that will hold up to the abuse and last a long time.

Good to hear. I've got 33x12.5/15 MTR's right now and they are the loudest tire I've ever heard in my life. Granted they are cupped something fierce but they are absolutely thunderous.

Looking forward to something a touch taller, an inch wider and definitely quieter.

I'm in the same situation with replacing a set of 285/75R16 BFG ATs. Overall, the tires have been good.
- Excellent wear & treadlife (70k+!)
- Excellent sidewall.
- Decent water, ice, and so-so snow performance.
- Not very good performance in mud.

I was researching the Duratracs as a replacement AT with better mud performance. In research, I found many bad reads on poor tread life and weak sidewalls. I can't say personally if they are any good but I am going to shy away from them. I'm not dogging your choice, just a FYI.

I've heard the tread life is poor on trucks but these are going on a Jeep and they've been holding up well on the TJ's. I'm not terribly concerned about tread life, my Jeep is pretty much a grocery getter until it's paid off and we have another reliable vehicle for transportation. My truck was totaled in January and I had to use the insurance money to put a roof on the house so the Jeep is all we have for the time being.

Knight. I did my rear bumper on my 98 Dodge 2500 and not only does it look great but it pretty much takes anything you throw at it. Great protection as well, its been tested at certain thickness that the LineX is nearly bulletproof FYI.

Sorry to hear about your truck Phyodog. I'll also be waiting for the pics and would probably ping you in the future to see what you think of the tires. We all know now internet reviews vary.

In my circle we use UPOL Raptor liner. Haven't done wheels as it adds a little unsprung weight and getting it even isn't easy so ballance becomes a bit of an issue with street driven rigs. I have flat black wheels so touch up paint is all I need.
The liner we spray on goes on the body panels and armor instead of paint. But if you are about the look, it sure is cool.

Finally got the tires mounted up today and just put them on the Jeep. The MTR's were cupped so badly that they were thunderously loud. The new kicks are lighter and much quieter, damned thing drives like a brand new Jeep.

Looks pretty slick. I've been running Nitto Terra Grapplers on my F250 and have been very impressed with the mileage I've gotten out of them so far.

A guy I work with covered the fender flares, bumpers and rockers with some sort of spray on liner, but it looked like shit after a few months. He's pretty much a dumb ass, so there is no telling what he used.

Just had my pickup LineXed with their new premium formula. It changed the look of my truck and I am VERY happy with their product. I am going back in a couple weeks for their undercoating process on the under side of my truck.
