any three gunners out there??

hello all,

been shooting three gun for about 4 years now, and im sick of lugging all kinds of shit everywhere looking to build a cart, any of you have plans for one or can post pix of some for ideas, would like it to hold at least 4 rifles, have a box for ammo, muffs, brass, etc. thought of having a second box or area to strap a small cooler. lets see what you got

I am currently working on building a cart out of an old 3 wheeled baby stroller. I bought it cheap from goodwill for like 11 bucks. Then I got some cammo fabric from walmart for a couple of bucks and working on sewing up a hammovk piece for on it to hold ammo and stuff then gotta get some ATV rifle holders to mount to either side of the uprights to hold shotgun and rifle on each side.

+1 on the jogging stroller. They have bigger tires that help on uneven terrian. The two side rail get the ATV gun mounts, hold one rifle and one shotgun and the baby seat has enough room for a good sized tool bag which hold all my ammo mags ect.... and under it has room for a small cooler. Don't have any pic's for I'm also building mine up. But the idea has came from the many I have seen at three gun matches.

for those using the jogging strollers, it can fold with the atv style gun racks mounted on it, then you just put your shooting bag where the seat is?

Yes it'll fold up. The rear of the stroll (handle) is wider than the front. So it will fold up as it always did. The guns run with the tube framing so they make a long sharp triangle shape. I'll see if I can find a pic of one.

I've shot 3Gun since '03 or so and have been match director for various 3Gun, MG, and LR matches since 2006. I don't care what systems people use to carry all their gear; <span style="font-style: italic">however</span>, there are no "allowances" for safety infractions.

At matches where "strollers", carts, and wagons are prevalent, there are more muzzle infractions (unsafe muzzle direction) than elsewhere and those infractions are almost categorically committed by the stroller/cart/wagon crowd.






Carts do not necessitate poor gun handling - it just happens to turn out that way. For this reason, I am against their use. For a typical rifle or 2 gun stage (rifle/pistol), I'll just throw everything I need in the pockets or main compartment of my AR case (with my rifle in it). If I need shotgun, I'll grab that case too. There's no need to haul more junk from your vehicle than you need to <span style="font-style: italic">shoot</span> the stage anyway.

If any of the above problems happened at one of my matches and I saw it the shooter would be out of there (DQ).

And they tend to suck pretty bad when it's muddy. Here's some abandoned (or in bad shape) carts at Tiger Valley

Have been shooting 3gun since the mid 90's .
In my opinion a cart is an excuse to bring way too much crap and fosters unsafe gun handling . When shooters load and unload there long guns from the carts muzzle discipline goes out the window .
At the 2008 Ft Benning 3 gun match there was one squad that was filled with carts and Myself and Zak watch the gun handling and decided that Zak would take some pictures of the bad gunhandling and after about 20 minutes we gave up as the situation never changed .
Take the gear You need and not everthing in the safe . I have 2 long gun cases and a large Green Mountain range bag that is enough to carry all my gear and ammo .

some valid points above, but i dont see how a cart makes it any unsafer than a case being carried horizontally. if an idiot is gonna be flagging people an idiot is gonna flag people. when i first started shooting i had 2 gun cases and an assault pack. over the years of lugging it around i got it down to a shotgun in my drag bag, with all my ammo, muffs and all that in the pockets, and an m4 case. but then i got my chair, my camera bag. mainly i want a cart so i can have a cooler with me. and might as well have all my stuff on it too. what matches are you guys attending up in the denver/ft collins area? by the way russ that one looks alot like what im wanting, i like the atv rack thing, but those wooden racks look better for carrying more than 2 long guns

The stuff that I have seen is the guys with the long guns cased typically uncase there stuff on the line or at the berm at the side of the range . The cart guys park there stuff and then don't bother to orient the thing so as to keep the muzzles in a safe direction . The wagons seem to be the worst offenders .

thanks for the links, maybe ill make it up to one of those some time. yeah the case thing makes sense. most guys prolly dont worry about it cuz they know they are empty and they are just sweeping them for a second. ive seen guys get shot that way, luckily in body armor but still. it was empty and he just sweeped him for a second uh huh. i know where your coming from.

do you ever shoot the monthly match at the aurora gun club, i always wanted to come to that one, whats the round count, do you have to be a member. where was that mil/le match at. you guys do that annually. that team stage looks fun.

Sometimes , it is the same weekend as the prairie dog match in Pueblo so there is a schedule conflict as to what to shoot and the bolt gun has been wining lately .
Want to start shooting more action stuff now that the job thing has been sorted out and the AGC match may start wining again .

No You don't have to be a member and typically 100 rds of rifle and pistol and 50 of shot and 10 slugs is more than enough .

sweet sounds good, i typically shoot the match out in lake george. that same weekend. conveniently my mother is moving to denver from PA soon so i would be able to stay up there and not have to drive from here at like 5 am. maybe we can link up some time and hit it up. lemme know if you plan on going one of these months.

Using a cart does not *make* someone be unsafe, it just turns out that it is *easier* to be unsafe. Sweeping someone with a long-gun is strictly against the rules and is grounds for a match DQ.

At the matches I attend we allow the cart and wagons. But everyone knows therule and what will DQ you. So they know where they stand. I've been carring a large tool bag with my mags ammo ears eyes two water bottles shotshells pistol on my side rilfe slung over back and shotgun in one hand bag in other. I've had trouble with this moving from stage to stage. The slung rifle is the main problem the sling just don't keep it in place and my hands are full so I can't help it out any. This is one reason I am building a cart that and I also would like a cooler with me. Now don't get me wrong I know better than to sweep people with a muzzle and I'll make sure I don't but I have seen the problems that the cart bring. It don't take but a DQ and send them home and they'll learn to be safer and if not then they may not be the people you want at your range.

Here's a really old pic taken right after I set mine up. The long guns have chamber flags in them at matches but like mentioned above you do need to pay close attention to your muzzles.

I used a jogging stroller and a couple sets of ATV gun racks (Big Dog IIRC). The cheaper mounts wouldn't work as they held the guns outside the rails of the stroller. It was extremely unstable. After switching to these racks, the rifle/shotgun are directly over the rails and the whole thing is pretty well balanced.

I had a good friend that shot alot of Service Rifle, he built one out of PVC pipe, couple bolts, lawnmower wheels from tractor supply and a milk crate. It looked ghetto as all fuck but it got the job done, and I think he said he had 24 dollars invested in it, don't know how on the cheap yer wantin to go

This is my set up for three gun, or as USPSA presently calls it Multi Gun. I shoot open, limited and tactical. My cart is currently set up for open class. This is when I carry the most equipment. I quit shooting for a number of years and when I got back into shooting I started off with the IPSC/USPSA but then I found the long range tactical, which is mucho fun and less BS. Hope this helps. This cart carries all my equipment and ammunition for all three guns.

those are shotgun speed strippers, they look like they hold 4 rounds. He is shooting open class so you can use them, the orange part is the handle, grab it, line it up on the feed ramp installed on the shotgun and shove it home in one fluid motion and it loads all 4 rounds.

they are all speed strippers, they may all hold a different amount of shells, for various stages. It looks as if they are all marked in some way, some could hold slugs, some hold buckshot, and various amounts of each, you may need 3 slugs in the middle of a stage, so one holder only holds 3 rounds and load them with slugs, you can look down and see how its marked and know which one to pull and load.

We have a match coming up in 2 weeks, the Ga State Shotgun Championships, gonna have 88 rounds of bird, 20 slug, and 6 or 8 buckshot, I cant remember exactly at the moment.

Those are Tec Loaders. The stock ones hold 4 shotgun shells either shot or slug. Nordic components make aluminum extensions for the Tec Loaders so they will hold 8 rounds. The Tec Loaders with the handles that are painted red are for slugs and the other ones are for shot. I do that so I don't confuse the shot with slugs. You can see on the shotgun there is a Arredonde accessories Tec Loader guide.

I see now what your working with looks pretty dang awesome! I little 3-gun match I shot is a pratical 3-gun match. Not everyone has high cap shotguns so they limit the rounds in the gun down to 3 and make you do reloads on the stage. Never seen a open class 3-gun match being shot. Thanks for the info.

I disagree with Zach about the carts making the handling of the firearms anymore unsafe than it would normally be. A muzzle control is always the competitors responsibility. I have competed in matches like the SOF three gun, USPSA three gun/multi gun and numerous other tactical and three gun matches. I have carried firearms in a multitude of different ways. To me, with all the equipment you need to carry, especially in open class, the cart is an easy way to organize that equipment. Once the firearms are placed in the cart they are always pointed in a safe direction. I have seen, more times than I care to remember, when competitors are pulling rifles and shotguns out of bags where they sweep people standing around them. I have also been the match director for a number of three gun competitions. So again I will say, safety is everybodys responsibility that is at the match and muzzle control is the competitors responsibility. I also want to thank Zach for his videos on long range tactical competition. When I started shooting again after taking a number of years off and watching the video I was pretty much hooked.

I cant make it, Ill be shooting bolt gun in Taylorsville Ga at Creekside Firing Range, its the big 2 day match with shooting on saturday and field craft stuff on sunday.

+1 on the safety aspect of strollers/wagons.I use a good dual rifle drag bag that has shoulder straps.An additional medium size bag carries all my ammo and I wear my pistol in an appropriate holster. I can pack all my gear wherever I need to go. I carry a 100 oz Camel bak and power-bars in my bag.
Everything is done online as far as removing rifles, loading ...etc. Range where I go has rifle racks at all the stages. Yes we've run short on storage occasionally but the racks can be moved around and the guys running the stages do pretty good job keeping things sorted out. There has recently been discussion about banning carts/strollers because of overcrowding and safety issues. Just my two cents. Stay safe and have fun.

Ken,

The 3-gun matches and "practical-tactical" matches you've shot at Steel City are very remedial as far as stage content and equipment. We're trying to address that. Stay tuned for something more interesting this Fall.

Carts like those discussed and pictured are likely here to stay whether you like 'em or not (unless banned by the MD or range hosting the match). They are safe for long gun transport as long as a safety flag is inserted into the chambers.

That said and as Zak and others have pointed out earlier in this thread, if your head is in the match and you're pre-planning the ammo and equipment you'll need for a stage or series of stages, it's no problem at all to carry your stuff around in a double case (Blackhawk, Brownells etc) + range bag or backpack.

I've shot multi-gun for 12+yrs and have never considered using a cart. No problem at all if you like to use them, I'm sure they're convenient. To each his own.
