Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

Have had a class "A" CDL for over 30 yrs.
IF your under 25 yo, MOST outfits will not touch you.
ALWAYS take a FULL printout of your driving history anytime you apply for a driving job.
Do you have your DOT med. card?
IF, you like being away from home for 3-4 weeks at a time it's an OK job.
Winter is another world, BTW.
Good luck,
LG

Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

I used to drive a truck for a living about 15 years ago, did it for about 10-12 years. Like the post above says, you really have to enjoy living away from home, taking showers in truck stops, eatting in truck stops, and most of all dealing with 4 wheelers, and I'm not talking about the ATV kind either. It's a rough job for a married man, and not to easy on a single one.

Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

I'm over 25 married with kids and don't have DOT med card yet. I know OTR will be tough for my family. So my question is OTR really making good money>? If ever, should i do lease or company driver? Any trucking company that you can recommend? I heard alot of horror stories about CR England and other companies. Are they all the same trying to screw people/?

Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

Go an get your med card ASAP. NO company will talk to you till you have one.
What endorsments do you have on your CDL? You'll NEED double/triples, tanker/haz-mat, manual transmission.
Stay away from lease backs. Drive the company junk.
How's your driving record.
Young kids and married....THINK IT OVER!
OTR is were your going to start, and you'll have to prove yourself, BTDT. You WILL be gone 3-4 weeks at a time....THAT'S THE LIFE!
Respectfully,
LG

As a new driver you will go hungry for a while. They will want to run you through their training and most wont pay you enough to eat while you get trained and pull their loads. Your best bet would be to try and find a local run if possible. How did you get a Class A CDL without a med card??

It isn't that hard, I took his post to mean he doesn't have a current med cert. I've got a Class B CDL airbrakes passenger and currently have no med cert. I got it 20 years ago when I was driving municipal bus. Haven't driven commercially in 18 but I've maintained it ever since just in case. When license renewal time comes up I get a new med cert.

Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

do not, say again NOT drive for prime. dad did for several years, put in a lot (millions) of miles, and hours. played the yessum boss bit and did everything asked of him. then he was told, take your 4 trucks and their teams, pound sand. still has some of his old books, and there were many, simultaniously, he was and still is a master with the "coloring book"

he then went to rbx, did the same thing, ran long and hard and put lots of money into their coffers, only to be told he was a "liability" because one day it would all catch up to him. so he went to paul mueller's steel and was driving the new tanks all over, mostly to canada for a long time. then they layed off a huge portion of their workforce, from drivers, to admin, and janitors to welders. so him and mom (wife #3 by the way) moved to cali where she is from, and now he is running crude all over the region, working 6 days a week, and as many hours as he can squeeze out, legal or non.

now then, this from the youngest son of a man that has been driving for 21 years now. dont do it. what money there is in the job is not worth missing football and baseball games, summers, holidays, hell everything. if i could influence the past, i would tell my old man not to fuckin do it, and he says the same thing. work in a warehouse on forks, or run a dry cleaners, or whatever the hell you want, just not otr

Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

oh yeah, just after i went back to cali after boot leave, my old man was in an accident. he was pulling propane, going down familiar roads that we had run for years when pulling wood back to the house. first car blew through the stop sign, dad layed on the horn and jumped on the binders. second car blew through the stop sign, 2-14 year old girls, and the 16 year old driver in her sebring convertible. hit square into the passenger side doors, rolled right over the car. now the man that had 12 years clean of accidents has been sued by the families of those 3 girls, and lost, and will have "fatality accident" following him for the rest of his life. because as a cdl holder, you are a professional driver, and anything that happens you are "at fault" or liable for, plus double points for anthing you are cited for.

4 years in this beloved gun club we call the Marine Corps, in vietnam, and those are the only ones he cant shake. so you tell me now, do you really want that?

Re: Any TRUCK DRIVER HERE?

Just as a non CDL holder, there are only two type of TC's.
preventable and non-preventable. I have had only 4 non types and 0 of the other.
"Fix-it" tickets and a lower alky level for a DUI(.04%)weather your "on the job" or in your POV. Is just part of holding a CDL.
BTW, withOUT a current med card(has to be renewed every 2 yrs)the CDL is NOT valid. You can still drive your POV.
Cheers,
LG

I don't have the Class A CDL yet. Just the IP "Instructional Permit" I still need to take the actual driving test.

Anyways, based from what i have heard and told. I'm having second thoughts now. Looks like no life going this path. Specially if you have small kids.

Many thanks for all the advice.
