Friend of mine asked me and I have no clue. 17 HMR in magnum research. My first thoughts is pressure.

I've seen similar happen at the range. Someone was shooting 17 something in a semi auto, case was rupturing during ejection. Only happened with one brand of ammo and not some others.

It's been an issue in semis since the 17 HMR came out. High pressure, a bottle neck case and a blowback action are not a great combo.

He can clean the chamber more often and make SURE that it is dry. If doesn't improve can look into heavier springs or adding weight to the bolt if the design allows. If you look around will see reports and pics of the same thing with every brand of 17 HMR as well as some much more catastrophic case failures in some of the older .22 mag conversions.

He called Magnum Research and talked to them. I don’t know the jist of what they told him, but they offered him a credit for the cost of his rifle, or the same rifle in 22 Mag. Something to do with the bolt operation. I don’t know the whole conversation. I just posted this up to try and help him out. Didn’t know he was calling the company.

Thanks for everyone that added information.
