Hunting & Fishing Anyone enjoy fly fishing?

I fly fish heavily. As mentioned above, be careful, you may be divorced, broke or both if you really get into it. Lol. I just tied a bunch of flies for my yearly trip to upstate NY for Steelhead.

Was fishing alpine lakes for cut throat in Montana. All morning these huge fish would rise look for a few minutes at my fly and leave. Kept trying untill my wife felt we needed to leave (because she wasnt getting enough attention). We pack up and walk across the outlet of the lake and there are about 9 fish sitting in the current. We get excited cast a few times, nothing!

I thought im catching one of these bastards. Pulled 3 out with my hands.

It is a sickness, like hunting and regular fishing, it can be treated with regular trips into the mountains:

Any advice on tying your own flys? That's something I'm really wanting to do because buying flys seriously adds up.

I tie off and on. Youtube has about every instructable you could imagine for tying your own and after doing 2 or 3 of a specific pattern you can get it down pretty good. Flies may seem expensive to buy, but when you start tying your own, factor in your time. If you're like me and have too many hobbies and not enough time and money, its hard to get enough time to sit down and tie. I do recommend tying your own simple patterns though like san juan worms, salmon eggs, pats rubber legs, etc, as you can crank them out fast and the $ savings to time ratio is very high relative to more complicated flies.

About $ 3,000.00 in rods& reels , $ 2,000.00 in materials and tools so I guess you could say I ENJOY ! Fly Fishing !
I will spend $ 1,000.00 on a 3 day float on the White River @ the end of JAN. ( splitting the costs with my Buddy ) . I try to fish for a solid month in MT . when vacation slots allow & can tell you TIE your own flies as nothing is more satisfying than DIY and much more economical !
Insects/ Bugs are easy to tie and cheap ( .15 cents / fly ) but if you are really into BIG TROUT ! learn how to tie STREAMERS and when and where to fish them !
The best money I've ever spent was to book a trip to Kelly Galloups Streamer School ( a $ bargain ) .
Kelly has many tutorials on tying all flies and a GREAT 2nd ? ( I haven't decided yet choice is Gunnar Brammer . ( check out youtube ) his streamers are THE BOMB ! Period !!!!!!
Tying vises , Renzetti , Dyna -King etc... get what you can afford , just make sure it's a rotary vise .
Tools are way too many to list .
Just watch some of the tutorials by Kelly or Gunnar and get what they use .
I annually spend way more $$$$ on Fly Fishing than Hunting or PRS .
ADDICTED ? HELL YES !

Been fly fishing for many years as well as guiding for a few and tying my own flies. Don't put as many days on the river as in the past due to shooting. Favorite place is the high mountain streams in the San Juans in SW Colorado for native cuts.
