Just picked up a Quantum Tour PT from Cabela's for $160 and plan to get a crankbait St. Croix rod mainly for bass and stuff here in PA lakes.

For my trout rods I use two Shakespeare Uglystick rods that I swear by. 4'6" is nice for casting in between trees and shit. Both of them have ultralite spinning reels.

The baitcaster will be my first, and everyone says I'm going to hate it at first.

What do you use?

Re: Anyone here use Quantum baitcasting reels?

I got a couple Quantum reels, not the PT Tour but they're nice and I like em snuff to have bought more than one. Also have a older Diawa and several Abu Garcia reels too.
I think once you get it setup like it ougyta be, you'll be fine. Used to fish a lot with a buddy who spent more time cussing the rod n reel but really the problem was him! He'd backlash the piss out of it and after he cleared it I'd cast it several times with no probs..I like my baitcasters!

Re: Anyone here use Quantum baitcasting reels?

You have to set it for lure weight, the knob by the handle centers the spool, the dial on the other side you use to set the resistence for the lure you're using. It should drop about 1 foot per second.
My experience with Qauntum wasn't all that good, I went through 4 or 5 of them because the drags never held up.
But I was using them for trolling, drifing, and deep vertcal jigging, walleye fishing, a little different application than your use. I never could cast them either. But that was 10-15 years ago, and I was fishing 100 days a year, so my stuff recieved it's fair share of abuse. I did love the fact that you didn't have to turn the crank to relock the spool.
I'm sure they have ironed out any problems and you have a reel that will give you years of enjoyment.
I started out with Shimano, then Quantum, finally settled on Team Diawa reels. Even back then they were 200-250 bucks. I should have a box full of reels in my shed, still good, just retired if you need more!!
Enjoy and good fishin.

Quantum pt tour edition with 60 pd braided and a calcutta with 30 pound braided for the south texas brush.

Re: Anyone here use Quantum baitcasting reels?

ive had two of the spinning reels blow up internally on me, the cabo and the catalyst. but i used them pretty hard and in saltwater, so hopefully youll do better than me.

that being said i loved them until they broke

Re: Anyone here use Quantum baitcasting reels?

For light tackle, I use 100% shimano curados/citicas here in the salt (and when bass fishing). As close to bullet proof as you can get, especially considering the abuse they take here. I use shimanos offshore too. They build excellent reels.

That said, I think that quantum will be a good start to learn a baitcaster. You should be able to set the brake to a point to minimize backlash, and then back off as you get the hang of it. Fun learning new stuff anyway. Good luck.

Re: Anyone here use Quantum baitcasting reels?

I threw hand me down Quantum reels, 5-20+ year old, for a few years.

**Best advice I can give you is set the spool tension for your lure weight. Simply hold your rod ~45 degrees, w/ lure ~6 inches from rod tip, and release spool. Like mentioned above, the lure should drop slowly, maybe a 3 or 4 count before it hits the ground. Use the small dial under your drag wheel to adjust: Tighter setting (slower drop) will allow you to throw with more forgiveness, but less distance. A more free spool (faster drop) will let you throw farther, at your own risk....

If you are smart with them, dial them in right, and have a quick thumb, I think you can learn to love a any good bait caster. Quantum is a big, tried, and trued brand. I bet a brand new one worth some coin will be a pleasure to throw.

I like Pflueger for bait caster's and spinning reels. I throw a Patriarch bait caster w/ 10 lb test & Cabelas carbon fiber 6 ft rod for bass and walleye, Asaro spinner (various rods) w/ 6 pound for trout and lighter stuff (or heavier in the case of steel head up in Erie.) I am a just amateur, but I have made some very good casts with my Patriarch. If the wind is right, and a few clicks of the dial has you throwing into the wind without backlash, I can throw a 3/8 oz lure 100+ ft accurately. I have never hooked anything worthy of testing the reel, so I cant speak on durability. 4 seasons old and its smooth as butter. The reel is comfortable and solid, plus the drag / braking adjustments are audible and function well. High regards all around and well worth the cash.

Re: Anyone here use Quantum baitcasting reels?

I used to have a few Quantums but have since replaced all of them with Abu Garcia Revo Premiers and STXs. As for rods I mostly use shimano Cumara or St croix Legend Bass rods.

On make sure you have not just your spool tension set correctly but what I find to be the most important is the Internal brakes. Most of these guys are just explaining how to adjust the spool tension knob by the crank handle but on the non crank side there will either be another dial to adjust the brakes or there will be a button you push which releases the side plate that opens the side of the reel and there will be plastic bushings that you either slide in or out to turn the brakes on or off. there is usually 6 of the. if you are new engage 4 of them to start with and as you start to feel more comfortable work your way down to two. Im not sure if this helped or made it more confusing but i hope it helps. If not find a buddy or talk to your local sports shop and they will hook you up.
