Hello everyone,

I have been in the market to upgrade a scope on my primary hunting rifle. The rifle is a Remington 700 sendero SFII, it’s more so built to be a long range rifle. I currently have a leupold VX3 3.5-10x on the rifle. I am going out west for a mule deer hunt in October, my guide told me I should be ready to potentially take a shot out to 5-600 yards. I wanted toupgrade my scope to something with elevation adjustment and have been thinking about just using my vortex razor hd gen 2. The vortex is currently on a Sako Trg 6.5 cm. I have spent more time behind that scope than any others and am very comfortable and familiar with it. I just don’t know if it is the ideal option for the hunt. My concern is the fact that it is FFP and potentially having a shorter shot and not being able to really visualize the reticle on low power with lower light.

Do any of you hunt with the vortex 4.5-27x? If so what are your experience/thoughts?

Should I just buy something new that is more suited for the job? If so, then what should I consider.

Just kidding man, get into shape and be ready to hike with your rifle slung and you’ll be good to go. But be in a physical condition to hunt out West is more important than your scope. Take what your comfortable with and be ready for whatever.

I took my last deer with my razor gen2 4.5-27 and as long as your smart and adjust your power to low when moving and only crank it up when needed then you will be fine!
The illuminated reticle solves the fine reticle problem on low power and in low light. Biggest downside is the weight.. I stalked and tracked this buck for almost 2 miles with my 6.5 creedmore Rpr I do have an aftermarket carbon fiber barrel but it’s still a beast to pack with the razor on it..

If your going to get a lightweight ffp scope for hunting I would suggest the LEUPOLD mark5HD 3.6-18x44 much lighter then the razor and the coatings in this thing are crazy it’s almost as good in low light as the 56mm razor..

Thanks for all the feedback. The rifle is 9lbs, the vortex is about 3 3/4 lbs. plus bipod, rings etc. I’ll probably be around 13.5ish lbs.

The Leopold and the Amg seem like awesome options. I was actually hoping for a high power razor hd gen iii, but vortex is really dragging its feet on releasing that.

Screw the Sendro, take the TRG

The Razor II is not 3 3/4 pounds. That would be 60 ounces. The Razor II is 48.5 ounces so 3 pounds and half an ounce.

Took two deer last season with this set up. It was a bit of a pig to haul around on our 9 hour day, but once I was in a spot and was behind the scope, I had no regrets. Love everything about my gen II aside from the weight. Love it enough that I'm still thinking of sucking it up and continuing it's use even after swapping it for an AMG. The extra bit of fov vs the AMG is nice, and I also find the gen II marginally easier to get behind. It's really going to come down to how far you'll be able to trek with a heavier rifle.

While I haven’t really hunted with my Razor I did hunt a season with my Revic which for this discussion is pretty much the same thing. I hunt ridge country of PA where I can go from 100+ yard shots in big timber to 10 yard shots in the pines to a 500+ yard shot when I get to the fields and that is all on the 1000 yard walk back from my stand. The weight was a bit much for my needs (rifle was 14 pounds suppressed with bipod) and the 4.5x min mag was a handicap in the pines.

That being said if your rifle is light enough that the extra weight isn’t a burden and your shots are 50+ yards then I think it would make a good hunting scope for out west.
