Any of Wayne Goddard's books, especially $50 knife shop. Also look up David Boye. I have one of his books somewhere that I have worn the cover off of, it gives some great info on using saw scrap and detailed hardening and tempering of L6 steel.
Yes I have made my own knives and sold a few. If you simply want to make one knife you don't need much. If you would like to play around with some L6 I can send you a couple small pieces to get started. I bought 500lbs of L6 back in the early 90's for 5 cents a pound....those were the good old days.
